Four seats on the Elk River Area School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
Incumbent Tony Walter and newcomer Jamie Plantenberg-Selbitschka ran unopposed for the two at-large seats. Fellow at-large incumbent Jolene Jorgensen did not file for re-election. Board member Shane Steinbrecher faced challenger Larry Farber for the District 1 seat, and District 2 incumbent Jane Bunting ran unopposed to retain her seat.[1] Walter, Plantenberg-Selbitschka, Steinbrecher, and Bunting won election to their respective seats.
About the district
Elk River Area School District is located in Sherburne County, Minnesota. The county seat is Elk River. Sherburne County had a population of 90,158 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Elk River Area School District was the eighth-largest school district in Minnesota and served 12,823 students.[3]
Demographics
In 2012, Sherburne County had a lower percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 24.4 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Sherburne County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 32.2 percent for Minnesota. The county’s median household income was $72,041, above the state median of $59,126. The poverty rate in Sherburne County was 8.0 percent, below the state rate of 11.2 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information
As of the 2014 election, the Elk River Area Board of Education consisted of seven members elected to four-year terms. Five board members were elected at-large, and two board members were elected by a specific geographic district. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014, two at-large seats and two district seats.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period. The filing period began May 20, 2014, and ended June 3, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 14, 2014.[5][6]

Campaign finance
Elk River Area School District does not publish campaign finance reports for school board candidates. State law does not require campaign finance reporting if contributions or expenditures do not exceed $750 in a calendar year.[7]
