Three seats on the Elkhart Community School Board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

All three incumbents ran unopposed and won re-election to their seats. The candidates were at-large board members Karen S. Carter and Jeri E. Stahr and District B board member Glenn L. Duncan.[1][2]

Elkhart Community Schools is located in Elkhart County, Indiana. The county seat is Goshen. Elkhart County is home to 200,563 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Elkhart Community Schools was the 13th-largest school district in Indiana and served 11,844 students.[4]

Demographics

Elkhart County underperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.1 percent of Elkhart County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for Elkhart County was $46,712 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for Elkhart County was 16.5 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Elkhart School Board consists of seven members elected at-large or by specific geographic districts to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014, the District B seat and two at-large seats.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[6]
