For the past 38 years, I have worked and served in various educational positions throughout Nevada as a teacher, School District Technology Director, high school coach and athletic director. I have served on numerous Nevada State Educational Technology committees, athletic committees, county housing boards, and recreation/tourism boards. I was appointed by Governor Gibbons to serve on the Nevada Broadband Taskforce which initiated statewide wireless and fiber optic connections to several schools and school districts throughout Nevada. Over the past several years I have been a volunteer fireman and Lions Club member. I have worked closely with Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) programs and personnel to connect educational facilities utilizing the latest technology. I have devoted my adult life to serve Nevada, particularly Nevada’s youth. Thirty-eight years ago, I started my teaching career in McDermitt, Nevada where I learned quickly that remote adult education was essential for rural communities. I taught several classes through what was named Northern Nevada Community College, which of course is now Great Basin College. My entire life I have lived and worked in small communities and have a deep sense of loyalty to the community college system. I believe that the community college system is a great but underserved educational resource for the youth and adults in Nevada. Nevada needs to elect leaders who have vision, purpose, advocate for all NSHE institutions.
  • Funding: We need to oversee financial spending policies to ensure all programs are funded properly and wisely and ensure monies are targeted to programs with proper forethought and fairness.
  • Cost of Education: Explore ways to reduce the cost for students obtaining higher education degrees.
  • Student Enrollment and Retention: Expand enrollment while providing educational programs to entice students to attend Nevada institutions, both at the degree level and trade levels. Keep students seeking a degree or trade in Nevada during their education and after.
Build a better reputation for the board and the whole educational process.

We should involve all stakeholders, inside and outside the university and college system to establish a shared vision, goals, and investment.

Establishing buy-in with the parents, stakeholders, and community is critical to the success of program initiatives. Parents, business, and community members must feel their investment is worth the cost of education.

We need to bring trust back to the college system, including the Board of Regents. I have spoken with several parents and business owners who feel the higher education system is not doing an adequate job in providing a good, quality education for the students. We know NSHE is doing a great job in many ways and has great programs, but we need to do a better job communicating that fact. Education is a service business and we need to develop ways to articulate the fact that we are providing a great education for the students.
Education is the one of the most important commodies we have for a vibrant Nevada and country.
Strong advocate for Nevada high education. Overseeing funding and policy for higher education programs
