Emilio M. Garza was a federal appeals judge serving on senior status for the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. On August 1, 2012, Garza assumed senior status.[1] He retired from senior status on January 5, 2015.[2]

Education

Garza graduated from the University of Notre Dame with his bachelor's degree in 1969 and his master's degree in 1970. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1976.[1]

Military service

Garza served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970 to 1973.[1]

Professional career

Garza was a private practice attorney in the State of Texas from 1976 to 1987 before becoming a judge of the 225th District Court of Bexar County from 1987 to 1988.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Garza was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on April 11, 1991, to a seat vacated by Judge Thomas Reavley when Reavley assumed senior status. Garza was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 24, 1991, by unanimous consent and received commission on May 30, 1991.[3] On August 1, 2012, Judge Emilio Garza assumed senior status.

Western District of Texas

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Garza was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas by President Ronald Reagan on February 2, 1988, to a seat vacated by Judge William S. Sessions as Sessions assumed senior status. Garza was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent on April 19, 1988. He received commission on April 20, 1988.[4]
