What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Healthcare, Education, and an economy that works for both small business and their employees.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Bipartisanship. We must break the Annapolis political machine and stop with the tribalism. If we work together, we can achieve anything- including universal healthcare, world class schools, and an economy that works for all of us.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
My political role model is Peter Franchot because of his bipartisanship. He puts people over party and action over politics. That's why I'm proud to be endorsed by him.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Delegates must be accessible and responsive to those they represent. They also must be transparent on their positions and unafraid to stand up for what they believe in.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I'm a strong negotiator who thrives in taking on difficult tasks. I'm running for office out of a sense of obligation, to create the world I want for my children- making my motivations a constant reminder on who I serve- the people.
What legacy would you like to leave?
When I leave office in 4 years- I'd like to see a law requiring term limits, Maryland on the path to universal healthcare, our school ranking continuously increasing on a national level, and legislation in place that benefits employees and small business.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
My favorite holiday is Christmas... a bit odd for a Jew! We celebrate Christmas in our house and no other holiday can compare with the "Christmas Spirit". We are all a bit kinder and festive. Maybe we're still trying to get on the 'nice' list- but we are the best versions of ourselves during the Christmas season. Plus, Santa.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Governors and state legislatures serve two important functions for each other. First, they serve as a collaborative force to come up with the best legislation for the people. But, they also serve as a check and balance on each other. Those checks and balances ensure that the executive and legislative branch work together.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
We must build relationships with other legislators- on both sides of the aisle. That is how we collaborate, negotiate, earn trust and credibility, and ultimately pass the best legislation.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A nonpartisan commission should do redistricting.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
A woman was working as a nicu pediatric nurse at a highly respected hospital. At a young age - early 30's- she was diagnosed with lymphoma. She had to stop working to battle her disease. However, when she stopped working, she lost her health insurance, requiring her to get significantly more expensive insurance and increasing the cost of her treatment. This brave woman's story underscores why we need universal healthcare that is not tied to employment.
