Hi I'm Emily Voight, and I'm running because everyone deserves to be heard and have a seat at the table. I know the art of compromise and how to work with both parties. I'm a 4th generation Wisconsinite raised in a truly purple household by supportive parents. They taught me the value of hard work and the importance of community service. Everything I am today can be attributed to my life experiences as a mom, an educator, a businessperson and a County Board Supervisor. This campaign is personal for me. When my son's autism therapy was denied by BadgerCare, I asked the incumbent for his help. My opponent said he knew it was an issue and there was nothing he could do. This isn't an acceptable answer; representatives' jobs are to serve the people. went to another state representative and they were able to assist me in my problem, which means my representative could have done something. I will always be willing to help and if I don't know the answer, I'll find it. My name literally translates to "hard-working advocate for the people." I promise to live up to it!

I'm passionate about a lot of things, but being the mom of autistic sons has shown me the issues we as a state are facing not only in regards to healthcare but also our education system. Currently our state has pledged to leave no child behind when it comes to autism therapy, yet the state funded BaderCare medicaid program has been doing just that. With reimbursement rates to autism providers so low, therapy providers have had no choice but to deny therapy to children if they do not have additional health insurance, as was the case with my child. Our state legislature can fix this by accepting the medicaid expansion dollars from the federal government. Had we accepted the medicaid expansion package we would have had incoming revenue of around $1.1 billion dollars, our tax dollars coming back to us! This would have helped solve many issues our state is facing in regards to healthcare and even education - since we would have more money in the budget to fund special education programs. Currently our state is reimbursing special education programs at only 25%! When the incumbent was asked how he voted on increasing special education reimbursement rates up to 60% he voted against this increase. This is unacceptable, we should not be treating those with different abilities as second class citizens, they deserve better!
While it is very important for a State Legislator to know the law, and how laws work, I believe the most important principal one should have is to be willing to serve others. Public service, and a commitment to our constituents is what we are elected to do! A State Legislator needs to know the art of listening and offering aid to everyone, no matter if they are part of their party or not.
I am very hard working, and extremely compassionate, I've been told sometimes that I care too much. I see this as a positive and a sign of how committed I will be to my future constituents.
I would love to inspire mothers of children with different abilities to run for office! While I understand the challenges we face, and how much work it is to run for office, it is possible and your voice and your family's stories need to be heard.
My first job was as a server with a local restaurant called the Golden Basket, I was 15 years old. I worked for them for about a year and left when a opportunity came about to earn more money. It was definitely an invaluable job, teaching me not only the importance of money, but the value of our service industry.
This is a really difficult decision, but I would have to say A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith
It Comes and Goes in Waves by Greg Laswell
As a divorced mother, going back to college for my second bachelors degree was very challenging; but it showed me that with hard work and dedication anything can be accomplished if you set your mind to it!
While it is beneficial, I do not feel that it is completely necessary. There are many ways one can gain experience in their lives that can relate to governing. I was elected to the Calumet County Board of Supervisors in April, and it is definitely helping me to learn how the process works from the inside. While I have a teaching degree, majoring in social studies and emphasizing in political science and economics, I knew the basics of how a bill becomes a law, but I had not experienced first hand how the work is done.
I believe we need to use a non partisan group for drawing the maps. Maps should not elect representatives, people should. In order for the people to truly have a say in who they are electing, maps must be fair and they must be competitive. No one should be able to just walk into an elected position without having to actually work for it.
I would love to be on the education, children and families, environment, medicaid reform and oversight, and mental health committees.
