I am a wife, mother of a daughter in her twenties, small business owner of a yoga studio in Princeton MN. I am member of the Princeton Chamber of Commerce and Board member of the Friends of Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Sherburne County. I have lived in District 27 for over 19 years, so I know what it is like to live, work, play and volunteer in our community. I believe elected officials should represent everyone in the community not just the people who believe exactly what they do. I am running because I believe most folks live in the middle of extreme politics. I believe in the separation of church and state. I believe the fight for personal freedoms must include women. I don't believe in banning guns or abortion. I want to protect the current laws in MN that protect both the second amendment rights and women's right to choose. I am running to protect my daughter's rights and yours too.
  • Protecting personal freedoms and privacy for everyone in the district. This means protecting women's rights to choose and keep birth control legal. It also means protecting MN from gun bans.
  • Affordable Housing is a huge concern for residence of my community of all ages. It affects us all in one way or another. It could be that young adults choose to move away from our community or have to move back home to afford to live. Some folks leave for employment opportunities that allow them to afford housing. We need to make sure folks that love our rural area are able to find and keep the security and basic need of a roof over their heads.
  • Over 1/2 of MN 10,000 lakes are too polluted to swim in or eat the fish from. We must be diligent about protecting this dwindling and valuable precious resource we all depend on to protect the Minnesota way of life we all know and love.
Protecting women's rights. Environmental Protections and protecting personal freedoms and privacy.

Candidate Connection

Emy Minzel participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 28, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Emy Minzel's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

I will work to protect the Minnesota environment we know and love for future generations. Almost half of our water is too polluted to eat the fish out of or even swim in. Protecting our water and Minnesota way of life will be a major focus when I am elected. I will also work to make Healthcare affordable for everyone by promoting a Minnesotacare buy-in option or supporting Medicare for all. Medical debt is the number one reason for bankruptcy in America and we must address this issue now. Continuing Education is becoming a financial burden for our young adults. This keeps many young people from starting families, buying houses or even moving on in life because they are burdened with a mortgage worth of debt. This has to change. I support public funded two year college and trade school programs.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Protecting our natural resources needs to be a priority. We must look at our water as a necessity and do all we can to maintain a healthy environment for our future. I believe investing in maintaining our natural resources should be looked upon as important as investing in infrastructure and healthcare, to maintain a healthy and safe future. We need to start investing in preserving and protecting our resources like we maintain our homes. It is sometimes costly and hard but worth it in the end to live in a safe place with the necessities you need to live. Water is a necessity for life and our health, we must protect it.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Emy Minzel answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Bernie Sanders[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
Sustainable[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity to do what is right even if it is hard. No different then parenting and doing your best to foster in a better future for the greater good.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Dedication and passion to protect what I love. The people of Minnesota and the Environment that supports us.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
A Representative must do their best to represent their whole community not just the party that gets them elected. Every voice matters. We must work together to solve problems not point fingers of blame. This trend of party line politics is not working for regular citizens who only want to be represented fairly.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
Clean water for future generations. To be sure our State takes steps to preserve and appreciate the land of 10,000 lakes and Minnesota way of life we have been blessed with and often take for granted.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving. I am thankful for all I am blessed with.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Anything by Joel Salatin or Turn Here Sweet Corn by Atina Diffley[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Mother Earth reincarnated - Nurturing yet fierce[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My family and my dogs.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
RESPECT - Aretha Franklin[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
My love of food vs my gluten intolerance ;)[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
No, I think we need more regular people representing regular citizens. We need people who do not have an ulterior motive or power seeking for selfish needs. This is how you have a true voice in politics.[3]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Working together. We have become so separated we forget that we are all on the same team, on the same planet, with the same needs and desires. We need to stop pointing fingers and get to work making changes for the greater good.[3]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Yes I would love to serve on the Environmental & Natural Resources Committee[3]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
No two years is not enough to make a difference in your community. I believe it should be 4 years with a two term maximum.[3]
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I agree there should be changes made and a career in politics should not be a sure thing if all your doing is blocking progress and not open to changing with the times.[3]
