Analysis

In 2024, states enacted 414 election-related bills compared to 642 in 2023 and 235 in 2022.

The state with the most enacted election-related legislation was Tennessee (36), followed by Louisiana (35) and Georgia (33). The map below shows the total number of enacted election-related bills in each state.

One-hundred thirty-three of the election-related bills passed in 2024 (32.1%) were in states with Democratic trifectas, 223 (53.9%) were in states with a Republican trifecta, and 58 (14%) were in states with a divided government. The chart below shows enacted election-related bills by trifecta status and partisan sponsorship.
