Background
In 2022, Ballotpedia tracked seven state executive officials or candidates for those offices across four states who made 114 endorsements. These types of endorsements represented a new development compared to previous election cycles.
In July and August 2022, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and his opponent in that year's gubernatorial election, U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist (D), both endorsed slates of school board candidates. NBC News' Tyler Kincade wrote: "It was unusual to see a sitting governor wade into what are officially nonpartisan races that historically have been overlooked by big donors and the national media."[1]
In September 2022, NPR said of school board races, "[w]hat used to be small, local contests are now attracting outside money and attention from groups and political leaders."[2]
Overview
The five state executive officials who issued the most school board endorsements were:
- Ohio Auditor Keith Faber (R), with 25 endorsements, 13 of whom won (52%)
- Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R), with 14 endorsements, five of whom won (36%)
- Colorado Board of Education Member Steve Durham (R), with seven endorsements, six of whom won (86%)
- Colorado Board of Education Member Kathy Plomer (D), with seven endorsements, five of whom won (71%)
- Colorado Board of Education Member Stephen Varela (R), with seven endorsements, six of whom won (86%)
Four governors issued at least one endorsement: Alaska's Mike Dunleavy (R), Arkansas' Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R), Colorado's Jared Polis (D), and Oklahoma's Kevin Stitt (R). Additionally, two gubernatorial candidates—Virginia's Abigail Spanberger (D) and Washington's Semi Bird (R)—endorsed at least one candidate.

Noteworthy events
Gov. Pritzker's donation to state Democratic Party (2023)
On Feb. 27, Gov. J.B. Pritzker's campaign committee donated $500,000 to the Democratic Party of Illinois.[3] The Daily Herald reported on March 13 that the funds would be used to oppose candidates running for school and library board seats that "Democrats fear could be elected without much of a fight."[4]
During a March 5 interview on CBS, Pritzker said, "[Republicans are] trying to keep our schools from teaching Black history. They make up things about CRT in schools that just don't exist. And so they have got a lot of extreme right-wing candidates, frankly, on the crazy end of things that are running. And we just want to make sure that people know who they are and know not to vote for them."[5]
Lake County Republican Party Chair Keith Brin criticized Pritzker's donation, saying, "Gov. Pritzker is forcing partisan politics onto our local schools while trying to force his ideology onto local communities who ought to be able to set their own priorities for their schools."[4]
On March 23, the Democratic Party of Illinois announced it would invest $300,000 in support of candidates running for school and library boards statewide.[6]
