Engagement ring dispute goes all the way to South Carolina Court of Appeals
May 12, 2012
Greenville County, South Carolina: A dispute between Matthew Campbell and Ashley Robinson over who gets the engagement ring after the wedding has been called off has ended up in the state Court of Appeals. Campbell is fighting for the ring back, saying that it was given as a condition of marriage. The trial court ruled that Campbell was the one who ended the engagement, but Robinson should not be entitled to damages. The appeals court reversed the order, saying that basing the ruling on who ended the engagement was not right. "Since the major purpose of the engagement period is to allow a couple time to test the permanency of their feelings, it would seem highly ironic to penalize the donor for taking steps to prevent a possibly unhappy marriage," the court stated.[1]
