Campaign themes

2016

Finch's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • Having gone through the West Virginia public education system and been to college, I’ve seen first-hand the effects of the modern education system and the potential it has to be reformed in order to better prepare our youth for the challenges of tomorrow. We must ensure our youth receive an exponentially improved education. The current system, not our teachers, has failed the students across the state. Common Core is the epitome of what is wrong with the current system. I am a strong supporter of local control, including education. We know more about our kids and their needs than the people of Wasington, D.C.

Economy

  • We must do all we can to improve the economy in the state. This includes fighting against policy that will hurt the coal industry even further, tax reform to encourage business growth and to take the burden off the shoulders of hard working West Virginians, requiring a balanced budget for the state, and cutting wasteful government spending. Improving the economy makes improving our infrastructure more feasible, however, improving the infrastructure will in turn improve the economy. It’s important to work at it from both sides in order to get the best and fastest solution possible.

Veterans

  • I come from a military family (my dad retired from the USAF as a TSgt). I see that we need to do more for the great men and women who protect our nation and I will do all I can to do exactly that. These people have devoted their lives to this country and this state, it’s time we give back to them what they rightfully deserve. It’s impossible to thank them enough, but we must do all we can.

Government

  • The government has gotten too large and bureaucratic. Many steps need to be taken to fix our government. We must have a balanced state budget to ensure the future of our state. I strongly support term limits for our legislators. I also support drug testing for anyone who receives money from the government, including politicians. Transparency is vital. Every citizen should have easy access to how every representative voted on a particular issue. I believe our House of Delegates should consist of 100 members from single member districts. Taking these steps will help ensure our elected officials truly represent the will of the people which is the purpose of our government.

Infrastructure

  • The audit of the West Virginia Department of Highways offered great insight into potential changes that can be made in order to make our tax dollars be spent as wisely as possible. No one, including myself, wants to see any type of tax increases. We must look into any and all possible solutions to our pothole-marked roadways before even entertaining the thought of increasing taxes on West Virginia’s hard workers. With that being said, however, we have to fix our infrastructure. I’ve lost one tire to a pothole and I want to protect everyone else from having the same misfortune as me. Also with improved roads and other infrastructure, we will have an improved economy and thus more jobs to help eliminate Monongalia county’s unemployment rate of 5%.[2]
