Five of the nine seats on the Anne Arundel County Public Schools school board were up for retention elections on November 8, 2016. In 2015, Gov. Larry Hogan (R) appointed Tom Frank and Julie Hummer as at-large members of the board and Eric Grannon as the District 33 member. Hogan appointed Maria Sasso to the District 30 seat and Terry Gilleland to the District 31 seat in February 2016.[2] All five board members won retention elections in 2016. While all members of the board are appointed by the governor, they are subject to retention elections at the next general election following their appointment. Anne Arundel County Public Schools was the only district with retention elections among America's largest school districts by enrollment in the 2013–2014 school year.
