Hello! I'm Eric Hanke: a public servant, singer-songwriter, and proud Democrat running to be a representative for all the people of Texas' 31st Congressional District.

Growing up, my grandparents - immigrants from West Germany who came to America after World War II - helped foster in me two truths that have guided me through life: that we are all given our own gifts from God, which we have the responsibility to use to support people, and my love of music.

Every week, I work to help county and district employees all across Texas prepare for their retirement. The stories of these employees all across Texas, that are concerned about their ability to afford health care and whether or not Social Security will be there for them, are what have driven me to run for office.

In my music, I seek to use my voice as a platform to affect positive social change in the world, bringing folks together through a common language. The ability to break down walls and connect with one another is something that is sorely missing in Washington.

TX-31 has been my home for most of my adult life. In that time, we've seen fewer and fewer every-day people serving in Congress and therefore we don't see policy for everyday people coming out of Congress. I'm running to change that.

- Eric
  • I'm running on behalf of common people in my home state of Texas and everywhere else in this country who feel like they don't have a voice in government.
  • believe in sensible gun legislation that would expand background checks and close loopholes to ensure only law-abiding Americans can purchase guns. Furthermore, I support reinstating the assault weapons ban and implementing a voluntary buy-back program to get the excessive amount of these weapons off our streets.
  • I firmly believe that health care is a basic human right and that reliable, timely access to care should be guaranteed for all in our country. In Congress, I will put my greatest effort behind reforms that take us in that direction. My metric will be how we can help the most people as quickly as possible.
Health care, social security, climate change, and gun safety
We are the richest nation on Earth and yet there are over 28 million Americans without health coverage, and therefore, without access to necessary care. Even those who do have access to care are left struggling. In my conversations with county and district employees across Texas, I have heard a common theme with regard to health care in our country: it is too costly, it is not accessible, and insurance doesn't cover necessary procedures.

In America's current health care system, people's ability to get care is too often driven by a company's profit margins and not their own individual health needs. That is immoral and it needs to change. But as long as private companies are beholden to stockholders - without serious market competition - there will be a conflict of interest with regards to the level of coverage insurance companies will provide, and therefore a limit on the amount of care we have access to.

In spite of living in a free country with a free market, the current system prevents us from having the freedom of choice and access. If people's current insurance works for them, they should be allowed to keep it. For those who want an alternative, I believe that Medicare should be open to anyone who wants to participate - consumers and employers alike.

I firmly believe that health care is a basic human right and that reliable, timely access to care should be guaranteed for all in our country. In Congress, I will put my greatest effort behind reforms that take us in that direction. My metric will be how we can help the most people as quickly as possible.
