An effort to recall Mayor Eric Johnson did not go to a vote in Dallas, Texas. Recall organizers did not gather enough signatures put the recall on the ballot.[1]

Recall supporters

The recall effort was organized by Davante Peters. The Texas Tribune reported that Peters initiated the recall in response to Johnson changing his partisan affiliation to the Republican Party in September 2023. Peters also said that Johnson's attendance at city council meetings in 2023 were grounds for a recall.[2] NBC 5 reported that Johnson missed five city council meetings in 2023.[3]

No specific grounds are required for recall in Texas. The recall of local officials in Texas is governed by local charters. Because of this, recall laws regarding signature requirements and circulation time vary by locality.[4]

Petitions were filed with the Dallas city secretary on January 5, 2024. Recall organizers had until March 5, 2024, to submit about 103,000 valid signatures to put the recall on the ballot.[2] Peters said that about 13,000 signatures had been gathered.[1]
