I am a Democratic candidate for the Delaware State House of Representatives, for the 27th District, in the Newark/Bear area. I am a lifelong Delawarean with a long history of service to the community, including leadership and volunteer roles in various organizations. I graduated from the University of Delaware Honors Program in 1996, with an English major, a history minor, a concentration in Ethnic & Cultural Studies, and an Advanced Honors Certificate. Since then, I've worked as an educator, in Medicaid and Medicare, and now in human resources. I believe that Democrats in the 27th District deserve something we don't currently have-a State Representative who stands up for the most basic tenets of the Democratic Party, like a woman's right to choose, LGBT equality, and environmental protections. Also, I want to go to Dover to fight for major reform in the areas of public school funding, living wages and good jobs, criminal justice, healthcare, and campaign finance. In recent years, I've worked hard to elect Delaware Democratic candidates up and down the ballot, to promote and pass legislation in Dover, and to educate the public about political and social issues and the political process.
  • Unlike the current Democratic incumbent, I support basic tenets of the party like a woman's right to choose, LGBT equality, and environmental protections.
  • In addition to fighting for the basic tenets of the Democratic Party, I also want to go to Dover to fight for modern ideals including major reform in the areas of public school funding, living wages and good jobs, criminal justice, healthcare, and campaign finance.
  • I have a long history of service to the community, and as your next 27th District State Representative, I will bring to that position the same enthusiasm, dedication, and heartfelt concern for people that I've shown for years.
I am passionate not just about the basic tenets of the Democratic Party, but also about other issues including major reform in the areas of public school funding, living wages and good jobs, criminal justice, healthcare, and campaign finance.
First, I look up to many individuals in my personal life-including family, friends, and fellow political and social activists. Outside of my personal life, I want to follow the examples of the many bold political and social leaders who've come before me, leaders who've put people and service above all else.
Honesty. Integrity. Candor. Thoughtfulness. Listening. Dedication. Enthusiasm. Commitment to serving the people, and not political parties or special interests.
I would like to leave a legacy that inspires others to become active in their communities-including activism in the political and social arenas-and to fight boldly and tirelessly to help others.
I think the first historical event that happened in my lifetime, that I can remember, was the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. I was 12 years old at the time. I remember being especially touched by this tragedy because one of my favorite teachers had made it to the final rounds of being the first teacher in space.
My first job was painting houses during the summers, at age 12. I performed that job for several years, until I turned 16 and worked part-time in a grocery store. Post-university, I've worked as an educator, in Medicaid and Medicare, and now in human resources.
My favorite book is Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God." More than anything, it's my favorite book because of the feeling it gives me when I read and reread it, as I have done many times. I especially admire the strength and growth of the main character, and her determination to live her life on her own terms, despite facing serious criticism and obstacles. Also, the novel was written during the Harlem Renaissance, a time in American literary and cultural history that speaks to me deeply.
For the most part, the legislative chambers in Delaware have a good history of working together. I suppose the most important differences between the two Delaware legislative chambers are in terms of house legislations is introduced and works its way through the chambers, including committee assignments.
I believe it's most important that state legislators have shown a significant history of service to the community; that they have displayed a longstanding, sincere commitment to helping people; and that they have demonstrated a significant breadth and depth of knowledge and work on issues of importance to their constituents and all state residents. I believe I strongly fit each of these criteria.
Especially given that Delaware is a very Democratic state, I think it's vital that we move forward on modern ideals and issues, including major reform in areas like public school funding, living wages and good jobs, criminal justice, healthcare, and campaign finance.
I believe that the Governor and the State Legislature should work together to plan and implement a bold, people-centered platform for state residents. I also believe that the Governor and the State Legislature should be in constant communication to transform this vision into reality.
It's very beneficial to build relationships with other legislators. Through my leadership and volunteer roles on various political campaigns, my work to promote and pass state legislation, and my efforts to educate the public about vital issues and the political process, I have already built relationships with numerous Delaware state legislators. It is the responsibility of state legislators to work together tirelessly and boldly to improve life for all state residents, and to always place people above politics and special interests.
I believe I would of special service in committees related to my work and community experience-including committees related to education, healthcare, seniors' issues, electoral and campaign finance, criminal justice, and civil rights.
I've worked on the campaigns of numerous legislators, and there are some here in Delaware whom I especially admire for their bold work to improve the lives of Delawareans. I especially respect legislators who place serving people over serving political parties and special interests. I will never forget when a certain state legislator whom I admire said to me, "What we need in Dover more than anything else are people who are there for the right reasons." My personal history demonstrates-and I know-that I am running for the Delaware State House of Representatives for the right reasons.
Not long ago, at a community event, a constituent asked me which higher office I want to run for in the future. Honestly, I had no answer for him, because my sole focus is on getting elected so I can serve district residents and all Delawareans in the Delaware State House of Representatives. I am not running for this office because I consider it a political stepping stone, and I've given little to no thought to running for any higher offices in the future.
I have become friends with a young man in my district (and his mother). He reached out to me after learning about my stances on serious criminal justice reform and addiction issues. He epitomizes why people deserve second chances and why elected officials must remember each day that their focus must be on serving the people. This young man battled drug addiction, and after he almost died from an overdose, with the support of his family, he fought to turn his life around and abandon both drugs and crime. Now, he works at the grocery store where I shop, and he has a family and plans for the future. His story (and his mother's story) inspire me beyond words.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Delaware

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
