In just a few short years, we have transitioned the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office into a 21st Century law enforcement agency with a renewed focus on public safety, customer service, employee care, and efficiency. When I took office as the 11th Sheriff of Indian River County in January of 2021, I tasked our members with developing new and innovative approaches to the law enforcement services we provide. By empowering our leaders and embracing both the ideas of a new generation as well as those of our veteran staff, advances were made beyond even my expectations.
Through the combined efforts of the agency members and leaders along with our community partners, we have accomplished countless initiatives and modernized our approach to crime fighting. These have included improvements in law enforcement and corrections as well as innovative new ways to care for and train our employees to ensure they are always ready when you need them.- Employee Care We have also introduced new approaches to taking care of the dedicated employees of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Our internal peer-to-peer support program, the Sheriff’s Trauma Assistance Response (STAR) Team, helps provide our members with much need assistance and support as a result of the stressors that come with being an emergency first responder. Our partnership with Emerald Medical provides our staff with medical and mental health care by licensed professionals when needed. Finally, our Operation Be More Fit initiative encourages and supports our staff in an overall approach to mental and physical well-being.
- Law Enforcement Our efforts in law enforcement have included the launch of our state-of-the-art Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). From our RTCC, our crime analysis team works with deputies on patrol, detectives, jail staff, and our dispatchers to address problems in real time as they occur. The implementation of technology such as license plate readers throughout the county has resulted in criminals being identified and arrested who might have otherwise avoided detection and done harm to our community. In fact, within a few hours of being installed, one of our first license plate readers resulted in the arrest of a suspect in an auto theft with hundreds of other examples that have followed since.
- Corrections Our team at the county jail has pioneered several new inmate programs aimed at reducing recidivism and providing opportunities designed to help people lead productive lives. Vocational training includes food management, printing and design, as well as our budding agriculture program, barber training, and art therapy. Additionally, our partnership with Treasure Coast Community Health (TCCH) has allowed for improved health care, including resources immediately available to inmates upon release. This new approach to medical treatment is anticipated to play a key role in reducing the chances of a person returning to jail after their release.
Even with all of these advances, and so many more not mentioned here, I still have a lot to accomplish as your Sheriff. Plans are underway for a number of exciting ventures. We are building our investigations component to be ready for the next wave of scammers who try to steal the hard-earned money of our citizens. Advances in the use of cryptocurrency and elaborate computer scams continues to plague part of our county and we are preparing our detectives to reduce the chances these crimes will affect our community. We also plan to work with our municipal police departments and initiate a unified dispatch center to avoid 911 callers being transferred during an emergency.
