Candidate Connection

Eric Stoltz participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 29, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Eric Stoltz's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. The implementation of a "Medicare for All" single-payer healthcare system. 2. Federal descheduling and legalization of marijuana, decriminalization of drug usage. 3. A constitutional amendment allowing governments (local, state, and federal) to impose limits on contributions and expenditures for political candidates and political action committees, effectively nullifying Buckley v. Valeo and subsequent supreme court decisions that consider unlimited political spending a form of "free speech" protected by the first amendment.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Healthcare, criminal justice reform, campaign finance reform, immigration, taxation, foreign policy.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Eric Stoltz answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

John McCain. Though I disagree with many of his policy positions, he is the embodiment of patriotism, integrity, and grit. I hope that his party finds a standard-bearer as worthy as he.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
Boethius' "The Consolation of Philosophy." Though relatively apolitical, it highlights the sheer power of virtue, the worthlessness of evil, and the axiom that even the most powerful among us inevitably lose everything.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, Honesty, Magnanimity, Humility.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Intellect, Integrity, Work-ethic, Humility.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To serve the interests of one's constituents. To act for the betterment of society and improve the human condition.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
That I expended my time and energy to make the world a better place.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
I love "The Lord of the Rings." I have read it five times, and I hope to read it again when I have some free time. It is the most deeply imaginative and profound book I have read. I cannot fathom how Tolkien conceived of it.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Gandalf.[3]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
With elections every two years, there is no legislative body more prone to sweeping change than the House.[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes, absolutely. The fact that I have none is a detriment to my candidacy.[3]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
To defend against the sudden surge of authoritarianism, to escape the increasing burden of our national debt, to mitigate the effects of human-induced climate change, to fight the wealthy and powerful donors that have a stranglehold on the political process.[3]
