Eric T. Washington is a senior judge on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. He first joined the court in 1999 after a nomination from President Bill Clinton (D). He served as chief judge of the court from July 1, 2005, until his retirement from active service on March 18, 2017. Upon his retirement, he was the longest-tenured chief judge in the history of the court.[1][2][3]
Prior to his service on the court of appeals, Judge Washington was an associate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.[1]
Education
Washington earned a bachelor's degree from Tufts University in 1976. He earned a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, 1979.[4]

Judicial career
D.C. Court of Appeals
Washington was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the appellate court on January 6, 1999, to a seat vacated by Warren King. Hearings on Washington's nomination were held before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee on April 20, 1999, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) on May 20, 1999. Washington was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on May 26, 1999. He served as chief judge of the court from July 1, 2005, until his retirement from active service on March 18, 2017.[3][5]
Superior Court of the District of Columbia
Prior to his service on the court of appeals, Judge Washington was an associate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
