Candidate Connection

Erica C. Crawley participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 11, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Erica C. Crawley's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Education

2) Economic development and job creation
3) Access to high-quality healthcare[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about having universal pre-k for children. Develop, equip and maintain community based rehabilitation centers to treat offenders for drug addiction in lieu of incarceration, bail reform and decriminalizing poverty. Additionally, I am passionate about having nondiscriminatory protections for the LGBTQ in public accommodations, housing and employment.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Erica C. Crawley answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to my mentor Linda Hassan-Anderson. I would like to follow the example set by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he had a commitment to changing the circumstances for those who are/were oppressed by an unjust system. He also had a love for people and wanted everyone to live in a fair and just society.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
The closest book would be A Theory of Justice by John Rawls.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Someone who has integrity, kind, dedicated, disciplined and a good listener.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am diligent, hardworking, relate-able, and I listen to the citizens with a concerned ear, I am community-based centered.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
I believe the officeholder is accessible to their constituents as you serve at the will of the people. Additionally, it is the responsibility of an elected official to be ethical and transparent.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
A legacy of the fruits of my deeds to those who are inspired to pick up the fruit and go on.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The space shuttle Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986. I was 5 years old at the time.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was working at McDonald's. I worked there for one year.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
We had a conversation over dinner over how we believed the earth and life was formed. That turned into a huge disagreement which turned into silence for the rest of the dinner and car ride home.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because my birthday falls on that day every seven years, but more importantly I get to spend it with my family reflecting on how blessed and grateful I am for them.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
I have two: The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Both books will always be relevant and they keep my spiritually grounded.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
I would want to be Olivia Pope because she is known as the "Fixer"[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My bathtub is my favorite thing in my home because it is the place I can go to after a long day, with a good book and relax for a few minutes.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Beyonce-Formation[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Taking personal time for myself to focus on my health and wellbeing[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I believe it is beneficial to have state legislators who are competent in the legislative process and have a background that demonstrates a commitment to public service. Having previous experience in government or politics does not mean you will be an effective state legislator.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
True investment in education, raising the minimum wage, access to high quality healthcare and Medicaid, economic develop and job creation, and transportation.[3]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes, I believe you have to build relationship with other legislators in order to get legislation passed. The legislature cannot be effect if elected officials operate in silos.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A process that is fair.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Armed Services, Veterans and Homeland Security, Finance Subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education, Criminal Justice, and Financial Institutions, Housing and Urban Development[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party's leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Although I am not yet a legislator, once elected, I will serve where my colleagues believe I can best use my knowledge and skills.[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
I would want to model myself after Barack Obama as he was able to get bipartisan support on legislation that helped working families in Illinois.[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
No, my only interest is getting elected to the Ohio House of Representatives and serving the people of Ohio the best way I can.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you've heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
As I was out in the district obtaining signatures to get on the ballot, I stopped by a restaurant to get something to eat quickly and I started speaking to another customer about my campaign. The customer was an older gentleman who had retired from a factory job several years ago. He proceeded to say that he did not vote and would probably never vote again because it does not matter whether people vote, the government and elected officials base their decisions on corporate interests and their friends. Although I know there are many people who hold this belief, it was still disheartening to engage in a conversation with someone who was so firm in his belief that his vote does not count and there was no persuading him otherwise. I left the conversation feeling empathy for those individuals who believe they cannot contribute to our democracy and essentially are just living at the effect of policies that impact them everyday. As if they have no voice.[3]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Ohio

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Ohio scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
