I am Erica Deuso, a scientist, businesswoman, and advocate. Rising from a childhood filled with adversity due to heavy bullying, poverty, and trauma, I graduated from high school as an athlete and scholar. Leaving my small town, I earned a biology degree from Drexel University and entered the biotech/pharmaceutical sector. My interest in efficiency led me to an MBA and a successful shift to Business Process Improvement. Over the past 12 years, I have increased efficiency, improved timelines, and saved millions of dollars in time and resources.

Beyond my corporate success, I'm a passionate advocate for marginalized communities, emphasizing inclusivity for LGBTQ+ and people of color. Upon my victory in November, I'll be the first transgender person elected to PA state government, committed to breaking barriers and fostering diverse representation. I also advocate for improvements in the 3Es: Employment, Education, and Environment.

I live in Downingtown, PA, with my husband, dog, and three cats. I enjoy photography, home brewing, and running our many paths and trails.

With a blend of scientific prowess, business acumen, and advocacy, I aim to tackle today's challenges through innovative research, strategic business approaches, and progressive democratic policies that drive positive change.
  • People-Centric Leadership: Throughout my career, I've centered my work on helping people. From advancing medical treatments to improving employee efficiency, my focus has always been on benefiting individuals. This commitment extends to my vision for Pennsylvania, where I aim to address backlogs, enhance essential services, and champion initiatives that directly benefit our friends and neighbors.
  • History-Making Representation: I am prepared to make history as Pennsylvania's first transgender state legislator. Beyond breaking barriers, my goal is to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, particularly the transgender and LGBTQIA+ population. By fostering inclusivity and representation, I aim to bring about positive change in Harrisburg.
  • Results-Oriented Collaboration: I don't just state intentions; I deliver results. My approach involves rolling up my sleeves, collaborating with diverse voices, and finding practical solutions. I am committed to working across party lines, listening to constituents, and addressing issues through bipartisan collaboration. My focus on the 3Es—employment, education, and the environment—reflects a comprehensive strategy for the common good of all Pennsylvanians.
Passion fuels my advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, particularly transgender rights. Having faced discrimination, I understand the importance of creating an inclusive society. I am committed to amplifying the voices of the LGBTQ+ community in the Pennsylvania State Legislature, striving to secure equal rights, protections, and opportunities for all.

My dedication extends to workers' rights and unions. Recognizing the invaluable contributions of every individual, I stand firm in safeguarding their rights. I advocate for fair wages, comprehensive leave policies, and the right to form unions across industries. Unions are essential in ensuring workers have a collective voice, safe working conditions, and the power to negotiate for their well-being.

Additionally, I am a staunch supporter of the legalization of recreational marijuana. This advocacy stems from a commitment to criminal justice reform and recognizing the economic benefits of a regulated cannabis industry. Legalization addresses social justice issues by reducing nonviolent arrests and opens avenues for job creation and revenue generation.
My mother has been an incredible role model for me and my sibling. She is a true "go-getter" and never backs down from a challenge. When my father lost his job during my childhood, she took on two extra jobs to support us without complaining. She was always there for me, especially when I started my transition, asking questions and offering compassionate support. And when my father suffered a stroke, she was his primary caregiver and helped him recover. Regardless of the circumstances, my mother always finds a way to solve problems and move forward.
Individuals elected to public office must possess a strong sense of integrity, accountability, and a deep commitment to serving the public. They should prioritize the interests of the people they represent, empathize with diverse needs, and communicate transparently. Influential leaders inspire confidence in their constituents, collaborate across party lines to achieve common goals, and make informed decisions based on sound judgment and careful consideration of all available information. They should be accessible to the public, appreciate the value of diversity, and be able to adapt to changing circumstances to address the needs of their constituents effectively.

I aim to embody this description as I represent the people of my district.
My well-rounded academic education and life experiences have motivated me to represent our community in Harrisburg. My life's challenges, opportunities, and experiences have shaped my worldview, enabling me to connect with every voter in every street and precinct. I am excited to develop my connections in our community and build new relationships to understand the voters' thoughts, feelings, and ideas. By representing my constituents effectively in Harrisburg, I can ensure their voices and needs are heard. My background has equipped me to interact personally and professionally with people from all walks of life. I am passionate about ensuring that everyone in our community is represented with a strong voice, drawing from my comprehensive understanding of policies and issues facing our community.

My dedication to improving the lives of the people of this district and Pennsylvania is at the core of my campaign, which qualifies me for this position.
If, at retirement, I can say:

"Throughout my career, my unwavering commitment has always been to serve with the utmost dedication, ensuring that the best interests of my constituents were at the forefront of every decision I made. My legacy will hopefully be rooted in a relentless pursuit of progress and a genuine passion for positively impacting the lives of those I represent. By combining a deep understanding of the needs of my community with a proactive approach, I consistently delivered tangible results. My tenure was marked by a legacy of effectiveness, where promises were not just made but fulfilled with a tenacity that reflected my genuine desire to enhance the well-being of the people I served. I took pride in my lasting impact, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, accomplishment, and a genuine commitment to getting things done for the betterment of my constituents."

I will consider that a successful legacy.
I was just five when the Challenger accident happened in my kindergarten class. Our mood went from excitement to confusion as our teachers tried to explain the tragedy on the TV. I didn't get it then; I felt confused and innocent, trying to understand why the adults seemed so sad. They were trying to shield us from the harsh reality of the shuttle disaster. That memory still reminds me how fragile things can be, even in a kindergarten classroom filled with innocence.

Unfortunately, in today's world, the innocence that was once shattered by watching a disaster occur thousands of miles away is now barely noticeable to kids. They have to train for active shooter incidents or even face them in their schools on a seemingly weekly basis.
When I turned 16, I found a job working at a now-defunct clothing store called The Bon-ton, helping people find the perfect outfit for any occasion. Working with a diverse customer base taught me to listen to each person to understand their wants, likes/dislikes, budget, and needs. No two were the same, nor was any classification monolithic in their tastes. I stayed in this job for about two years.

Much the same is true with voters. No group is monolithic, and everyone will have their own needs in choosing their votes. You have to listen to understand, not just to respond.
"The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ" by Philip Pullman offers a thought-provoking and imaginative reimagining of the life of Jesus Christ. The story presents two distinct individuals: Jesus, a compassionate and inspirational figure, and Christ, who represents religious leadership's more calculating and political side.

The story delves into the themes of faith, the essence of religious institutions, and the contradiction between the spiritual message of Jesus and the organized aspects of Christianity. Author Pullman uses this retelling to encourage readers to question the position of structured religion, the power dynamics within religious organizations, and the intricate relationship between myth and historical truth. The book engages with these themes uniquely and thoughtfully, presenting readers with a new perspective on a well-known biblical tale.
Senator Leia Organa. As a fearless and principled leader, she navigates complex political landscapes with resilience, advocating for the greater good and standing up against tyranny. Leia's ability to balance strength and compassion and her commitment to diplomacy make her an inspiring example for women in politics, showcasing that resilience, intelligence, and empathy can coexist with effective leadership.
Everything is Awesome by Tegan & Sarah
For the initial 29 years of my life, I grappled with the challenges of gender dysphoria. It was a journey marked by self-discovery, acceptance, and resilience. The struggle to align my identity with societal expectations was undoubtedly tough, but it has gifted me a profound understanding of the hurdles many others face in their own lives. Navigating through the complexities of gender dysphoria has instilled in me a deep empathy for people dealing with various forms of adversity. It's shaped my identity and perspective, fostering a genuine connection with the struggles and triumphs of those around me. This personal journey has become a source of strength, enabling me to approach life with compassion and a broader appreciation for the diverse experiences that make us who we are.
The governor and state legislature should collaborate and communicate to achieve effective governance, benefiting the citizens they serve.
Pennsylvania is facing several significant challenges in the coming decade. The shift away from fossil fuels poses economic and environmental hurdles, requiring careful planning and investment in alternative energy sources. To combat climate change, proactive measures must be taken to mitigate its impact, such as adopting sustainable practices and policies.

Reforming education funding is crucial to address disparities and ensure equitable access to quality education. There is also a shortage of affordable housing, which demands innovative solutions and collaboration between the public and private sectors to provide adequate housing options for all residents.

Promoting racial equality requires addressing systemic issues and implementing policies that foster inclusivity and fairness. It is essential to have collaborative efforts from government, communities, and organizations to tackle these challenges and create a more resilient and equitable future for Pennsylvania.
I don't think that having prior experience in government or politics is a requirement for state legislators. In fact, having experience in business or community can provide a unique perspective that allows legislators to better understand the real challenges faced by people and businesses. This can lead to a more practical and citizen-centered approach to governance.
Building relationships with other legislators is crucial in politics. Just like in the business world, success often depends on effective collaboration with a diverse group of people. Fostering relationships across ideologies, beliefs, experiences, and seniority is essential for achieving common goals and creating policies that address the population's diverse needs. Cooperation and understanding among legislators can lead to more informed decision-making and better outcomes for the community.
Joe Biden's approach to governance is characterized by his ability to work across party lines and find common ground. He understands that in order to achieve significant success, it is important to collaborate effectively with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. His commitment to inclusivity and diversity is reflected in his policies and actions, which aim to create a more equitable and just society for all. By prioritizing bipartisanship and collaboration, Joe Biden serves as a valuable example for legislators and leaders around the world who seek to promote positive and inclusive governance.
At present, my main focus is to gain entry and make a positive impact on the lives of people in my district and Pennsylvania. I am not prioritizing any future political offices, but I am open to opportunities that align with my dedication to public service.
Chervoone Rozecki was an exceptional human being. She dedicated her life to serving others as a nurse, always putting the needs of her patients first. She was a devoted mother of seven, a loving wife to her hard-working husband, and a cherished sister, daughter, aunt, niece, and stepmother. Chervoone was also one of my closest friends; I was fortunate to have her in my life. Sadly, on June 23, 2023, she lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, and selflessness will continue to inspire and touch the lives of many.

Although this story begins with a tragedy, it is not the end but the start of an inspiring tale of resilience, community, and love. After Chervoone's passing, her family was understandably devastated. Her husband, Wayne, tried his best to remain strong for his children and the rest of the family. Despite the pain, the kids did their best to continue their lives. However, amidst the sorrow, there was also strength. A memorial service was organized for 100 people, attracting nearly 400 attendees. I witnessed the community coming together to support each other, giving me hope for the future.

Today, I find Wayne to be an inspiration for those who have experienced the trauma of losing a loved one. He has successfully supported his family through the most challenging six months of his life and recommitted himself to his family's future. He started exercising again, knowing his life's purpose was to be there for his family. This family could not bear the loss of both parents at such a young age. Additionally, I have seen him process grief that no one should have to endure in a way that would inspire most people.

This inspiration has motivated me to improve myself. I pledge to uphold the values that Chervoone embodied throughout her life, such as integrity, honesty, hard work, and prioritizing the needs of the people.
A priest, a pastor, and a rabbit walk into a bar.

The bartender looks at the rabbit and says, "What are you doing here?"

The rabbit replied, "I'm not 100% sure, but I think I'm a typo."
It's not suitable for the legislature to oversee emergency powers directly. Doing so would compromise the separation of powers and cause delays in responding to emergencies. Instead, the legislature can create clear guidelines and limitations through legislation to ensure that the executive branch operates within predefined boundaries while still having the flexibility to address emergencies effectively. A functional and resilient democratic government relies on separating powers with a well-defined system of checks and balances.
Collaboration and compromise are essential in policymaking. Finding common ground benefits Pennsylvania, even if it means not getting everything we initially wanted.
Seeing that the gun violence epidemic has not abated, we need to find something we can all agree on. My first bill would be a stand-alone bill proposing that all firearm purchases in Pennsylvania go through a Federal Firearms License holder, or in other words, closing the so-called "gun-show loophole."
Given my extensive background in science and healthcare, the Health Committee particularly captivates my interest. The opportunity to contribute to the review of bills about health, healthcare accessibility, medical facilities, and public health programs aligns seamlessly with my expertise.

Drawing from my rich history in the brewing industry and my current status as a dedicated homebrewer, the Liquor Control Committee emerges as a natural choice. I am well-equipped to engage in discussions related to the regulation, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages.

My educational background and a genuine concern for fair school funding position me as a compelling candidate for the Education Committee. I am eager to leverage my knowledge and advocacy skills to address K-12 education, higher education, and funding allocation issues.

The campaign issue of affordable housing in Pennsylvania resonates deeply with me, motivating my desire to participate actively in the Housing & Community Development Committee. This platform provides an opportunity to champion new regulations on housing and lend support to marginalized communities in dire need.

My unwavering support for labor unions also propels me towards the Labor & Industry Committee. The prospect of contributing to reviewing labor laws, workplace safety standards, and workforce training bills aligns seamlessly with my commitment to fostering a fair and safe work environment.
