Northfield is where I’ve raised my family, built my career, and worked with all kinds of Northfielders to help our town thrive. I was elected to three terms as a City Council member from 2009-2020. Together we built affordable housing, expanded the library, and built a new police station, while keeping taxes reasonable. I have served on the boards of the Cannon River STEM school, Northfield Area Community Solar, and Clean River Partners. I love volunteering in the community; doing bird counts at a local regenerative farm, retail rescue of produce for the food shelf and invasive species removal in city parks.
  • More voices at the table leads to better solutions for Northfield. I’m committed to real engagement which prioritizes constituent voices, welcomes debate, and tells people how their input is used to make decisions. Public input must happen earlier during city project planning so local knowledge can be used to plan rather than be limited to comments on final projects. City Hall needs to slow down and operate at a pace where constituent voices can equitably be incorporated into decision making. As mayor, I’ll keep talking with you, prioritize your voice, welcome debate, and tell you how you how your input shapes decisions.
  • Local government focuses on providing services and maintaining infrastructure while planning for future growth and development. As mayor a top priority will be adding to Northfield's commercial/industrial tax base. To achieve this we should support our local businesses in their success and plans for the future. We should focus commercial recruitment to businesses complimentary to our top economic sectors; Healthcare, Education and Manufacturing. To support local employees we need to add housing, improve our transportation system and upgrade our parks.
  • As mayor an equity lens would factor into all of my decision making. Whether it is funding for parks or putting in sidewalks, I would evaluate how the action impacts all Northfielders. Our latest park plan calls out an equity imbalance in Northfield's parks and yet little has been done to address it.
I am passionate about community engagement. I work at Carleton's Center for Community and Civic Engagement as the assistant director for community impact where I’m responsible for strengthening community partnerships across a range of programs. I would bring a proven track record of forming and maintaining strong partnerships to the role of mayor.
I started my career as a scientist and I am passionate about addressing climate change. Northfield's biggest climate threats are flooding and intense rain events. We need to keep investing in flood mitigation efforts in Northfield and collaborating regionally on this issue.
I love reading. I am usually reading two to three books at a time. I often have a nonfiction, a sci-fi or cli-fi and a novel going.
The nonfiction book that I find myself referencing most is Project Drawdown. The book and the website https://drawdown.org/, have helped me prioritize my climate work and given me hope for climate solutions.
The mayor needs to set the tone for the council meetings and create a welcoming environment for people to feel comfortable engaging with the city. As a leader I have a commitment to lift up the voices of the people who are not comfortable addressing the council or are not in a position to speak publicly.
