I'm Erika Robinson-Watkins, a lifelong Hoosier, educator, and community advocate running for Indiana State Representative in District 4. With over 25 years in early childhood education and as a current Valparaiso School Board member, I've dedicated my life to empowering our youth and strengthening our communities. As a mother of two and an ordained minister, I bring a compassionate, family-focused perspective to my work.

My journey in public service began in the classrooms of Northwest Indiana, where I witnessed firsthand the challenges and potential of our education system. This experience fueled my passion for creating positive change, leading me to serve on the Valparaiso School Board and now to run for State Representative.

I believe in the power of community and the importance of listening to diverse voices. My campaign is built on the principle that every Hoosier deserves a chance to thrive, regardless of their background. I'm committed to bringing fresh, progressive ideas to the Statehouse while staying true to the values that make our district strong.
  • Protecting Women's Reproductive Rights: I stand firmly for a woman's right to make her own healthcare decisions. In light of recent attacks on reproductive freedom in Indiana, I'll be a strong voice in the Statehouse defending access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including abortion. I believe in trusting women and their doctors, not politicians, to make these deeply personal choices.
  • Strengthening Public Education: As an educator with over two decades of experience, I understand the critical role of public education in shaping our future. I'll fight tirelessly for increased school funding, better teacher pay, and inclusive curricula that prepare all students for success. My goal is to ensure every child in our district has access to high-quality education that nurtures their potential and prepares them for the challenges of tomorrow.
  • Community-First Approach: My campaign is about bringing people together to solve the challenges we face. I'm committed to listening to and addressing the diverse needs of all constituents in our district. From hosting regular town halls to maintaining an open-door policy, I'll ensure that your voice is heard and represented in every decision I make as your State Representative.
I'm deeply passionate about education policy, believing that strong public schools are the foundation of thriving communities. I'm equally committed to protecting women's reproductive rights and ensuring access to comprehensive healthcare. Environmental protection is another key focus, as I believe we must act urgently to address climate change while creating green jobs for a sustainable future. Additionally, I'm dedicated to policies that promote equity and inclusion, ensuring that all Hoosiers have the opportunity to succeed regardless of their background. Lastly, I'm passionate about improving mental health services and support systems in our communities.
My grandmother and mother were who I looked up to. They had a tenacity and perseverance I’ve never seen before. Despite the odds of life, they built and encouraged the next generation. They taught me to make the best out of a little. Aim high. Reach him. Trust God. Rest in Him.
I would recommend "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander. While it focuses on the criminal justice system, it powerfully illustrates how systemic inequalities can persist even after laws change. It's a reminder of why we must constantly work towards true equity in all areas of society.

I'd also suggest "Evicted" by Matthew Desmond, which provides insight into the housing challenges many Americans face. These books have shaped my understanding of the complex issues affecting our communities and the need for comprehensive, compassionate policy solutions.
Integrity, empathy, and a commitment to service are paramount for any elected official. We must be honest with our constituents, even when it's difficult. Understanding and genuinely caring about the diverse experiences of those we serve is crucial. An elected official should always prioritize the needs of their community over personal or partisan interests.

Accessibility and transparency are also vital. I believe in maintaining open lines of communication with constituents and being accountable for my decisions. Lastly, an elected official must have the courage to stand up for what's right, even in the face of opposition.

The core responsibilities of a State Representative are to serve as a voice for their constituents, craft and vote on legislation that benefits their district and the state, and provide oversight of state government operations.

This means actively listening to constituents' concerns and bringing those issues to the Statehouse. It involves carefully studying proposed legislation, considering its impacts, and making informed decisions. It also means being accessible to constituents, keeping them informed about state government activities, and helping them navigate state services when needed.

A State Representative should also work collaboratively with colleagues across the aisle to find common ground and achieve meaningful progress for Hoosiers. Ultimately, the core responsibility is to work tirelessly to improve the lives of all residents in the district and state.
My grandfather often brought our attention to the birth date and death date presented on a headstone... He’d reference the dash between the dates emphasizing its size but also indicating that our life, like the dash, is short. Make it mean something is what he’d tell us.

The legacy that I want to leave is to be willing to take a chance, even when the odds are against you, you're the only one in the room, no one thinks you belong, yet, you do it anyway trusting God to fulfill His plan for your life.
I remember my grandparents watching the news when Ronald Reagan ran for President. During his two terms, I was 6 years-13 years old. I also remember Mrs. Reagan’s DARE program being taught in school.
The Color Purple… The novel presents deeply complex and relatable characters, Celie, whose journey from oppression to empowerment is both inspiring and moving. Like many of my favorite movies, I associate with the character. Any movie where the main character becomes strengthened, empowered and life changing.
Living life without my mother. Not having her to exchange ideas, provide guidance, and just hold me in her arms when life seems too overwhelming.
The ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature should be one of respectful collaboration and constructive dialogue, with each branch maintaining its independence while working towards common goals for the benefit of all Hoosiers.

While the governor sets the overall policy direction for the state, the legislature plays a crucial role in crafting and passing laws. This relationship should involve open communication, mutual respect for each branch's constitutional roles, and a willingness to find common ground on important issues.

Healthy debate and occasional disagreement are natural and can lead to better outcomes. However, these should never devolve into partisan gridlock that prevents progress on critical issues facing our state.

Ultimately, both the governor and legislature should prioritize the needs of Hoosiers over party politics or personal agendas.
Indiana faces several significant challenges in the coming decade. Firstly, adapting our economy to the changing global landscape while ensuring good jobs for all Hoosiers will be crucial. This includes investing in education and workforce development to prepare our residents for the jobs of the future.

Addressing our state's healthcare challenges, including high maternal and infant mortality rates and the ongoing opioid crisis, will also be critical. We must work to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare for all Hoosiers. We must also ensure the protection of women's reproductive rights and healthcare throughout all of Indiana.

Environmental protection and climate change adaptation will be increasingly important. We need to balance economic growth with responsible stewardship of our natural resources.

Lastly, bridging the growing urban-rural divide and ensuring that all parts of our state can thrive will be a significant challenge. This includes addressing issues like broadband access, infrastructure improvements, and equitable funding for education across all communities.
While previous experience in government or politics can be beneficial, I don't believe it's essential for effective state legislators. What's most important is a deep understanding of the community, a commitment to public service, and the ability to listen and learn quickly.

Legislators from diverse backgrounds bring valuable perspectives to the lawmaking process. My experience as an educator and school board member, while not traditional political experience, has given me insights into the real-world impacts of state policies on our communities.

Ultimately, the most effective legislators are those who remain connected to their constituents, regardless of their background. Fresh perspectives can often lead to innovative solutions to longstanding problems.
Building relationships with other legislators is absolutely crucial for effective governance. While we may have different political ideologies, finding common ground and mutual respect is essential for progress.

Strong relationships allow for open dialogue, which can lead to compromise and more effective legislation. They also facilitate the sharing of diverse perspectives, which is vital for crafting comprehensive solutions to complex issues.

Moreover, these relationships can help navigate the legislative process more effectively. Understanding colleagues' priorities and concerns can aid in building coalitions and garnering support for important initiatives.

However, these relationships should never compromise one's principles or the interests of constituents. The goal is productive collaboration, not partisan deal-making at the expense of those we serve.
While I admire many legislators for various reasons, I don't seek to model myself after any one individual. I believe each legislator must find their own authentic voice and approach that best serves their unique district.

That said, I'm inspired by legislators who prioritize their constituents over party politics, who aren't afraid to reach across the aisle for the greater good, and who maintain their integrity even in challenging situations. I admire those who remain accessible to their constituents and who use their platform to amplify the voices of the underrepresented.

Ultimately, I aim to be the best representative I can be for Indiana's 4th District, learning from the successes of others while staying true to my own principles and the needs of my community.
Right now, my focus is entirely on serving the people of Indiana's 4th District as their State Representative. I believe in the importance of state-level governance and the significant impact it has on people's daily lives. I'm committed to giving my full attention and energy to this role if elected.

While I never say never, I don't have any current plans or ambitions for other offices. I believe in being fully present and dedicated to the task at hand. If I'm fortunate enough to be elected, my goal will be to serve my constituents to the best of my abilities in this role.
While I've heard many impactful stories on the campaign trail, one encounter stands out vividly. I met a young woman who relies on an electric wheelchair and requires personal care assistance. Due to recent state cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, not only was her request for additional care denied, but her existing support was reduced from three to just two visits per day.

This reduction has placed an immense burden on both her and her family, leading to additional medical complications and daily struggles. It's heartbreaking to think of anyone, let alone someone so vulnerable, being forced to limit their personal care to just twice a day.

This story exemplifies the real-world consequences of budget cuts and policy decisions made far from the lives they affect. It's unacceptable that our state would knowingly let down those who need our support the most. This encounter reinforced my commitment to fighting for adequate funding for essential services and ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens are not left behind.

Stories like hers remind me why I'm running. We need representatives who understand the human impact of every policy decision and who will prioritize the well-being of all Hoosiers, especially those who often go unheard.
My stepfather, the late Vietnam Veteran, would compliment me and others by saying, “You sure are pretty.” You’d respond with a smile and thank you. He’d finish the joke with…pretty UGLY!!!
The balance between executive emergency powers and legislative oversight is crucial for effective governance, especially during crises. While emergency powers are sometimes necessary for swift action, they should be subject to legislative oversight to ensure checks and balances.

I believe the legislature should have a role in both granting and overseeing the use of emergency powers. This could involve setting clear parameters for when and how these powers can be used, requiring regular reports to the legislature during emergencies, and establishing a process for legislative review and potential termination of emergency declarations after a certain period.

The goal should be to allow for necessary flexibility in crisis situations while maintaining democratic accountability and preventing potential overreach.
While I have many priorities, the first bill I'd introduce would focus on strengthening our public education system. Specifically, I'd propose legislation to increase funding for mental health resources in our schools.

This bill would allocate funds for hiring more school counselors and mental health professionals, implementing comprehensive mental health education programs, and providing training for teachers to better recognize and support students struggling with mental health issues.

By addressing mental health in schools, we can improve student well-being, academic performance, and school safety, while also providing crucial early intervention for mental health challenges.

While I'm open to serving where I can be most effective for our district, I'm particularly interested in committees related to education, environmental protection, and health and human services. These align closely with my background and the issues I'm most passionate about.

However, I understand that as a freshman legislator, committee assignments often depend on the needs of the caucus and the legislature as a whole. I'm prepared to serve wherever I can make the most significant positive impact for our district and state.
I believe strongly in financial transparency and government accountability. The public has a right to know how their tax dollars are being spent and to hold their elected officials accountable for their decisions.

I support measures to make government financial records easily accessible to the public, including detailed budget information and records of government contracts. I also believe in strong ethics rules for elected officials and government employees, including strict disclosure requirements for potential conflicts of interest.

Regular audits of government agencies and programs are essential to ensure efficient use of resources. I also support whistleblower protections to encourage the reporting of waste, fraud, or abuse in government.

Ultimately, transparency and accountability are fundamental to maintaining public trust in government and ensuring that it truly serves the people.
A state ballot initiative process could have both positive and negative impacts on Indiana. On the positive side, it would give citizens a more direct voice in policy-making, potentially increasing civic engagement and ensuring that laws better reflect the will of the people.

However, there are potential drawbacks to consider. Ballot initiatives can sometimes oversimplify complex issues, and well-funded special interest groups could potentially use the process to push their agendas.

If Indiana were to adopt a ballot initiative process, it would need to be carefully structured to ensure fairness, prevent abuse, and maintain the integrity of our legislative process. Any such change would require thorough debate and consideration of its long-term implications for our state's governance.
