Biography

Erika Yvette Mitchell was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Mitchell received her bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in computer information systems from Alabama State University in 2004. She earned a graduate degree from the Keller Graduate School of Management in 2022. Mitchell has taught at the AVEDA Institute. In 2010, she founded La Reina Pageant Productions. She has been associated with the Miss Africa U.S.A., Miss Latina U.S., and Miss Latin American Del Mundo pageants, as well as with the NFL Alumni Association, the Caribbean American Advancement Foundation, and the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Club of Greater Atlanta.[1][2]

All nine seats on the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education in Georgia were up for general election on November 7, 2017. Six seats were elected by district and three seats were elected at large. Six incumbents filed for re-election. A runoff election was held on December 5, 2017, after no candidate in Districts 2, 3, 5, and 7 won a majority of votes in the general election.[3][4][5]

District 2 incumbent Byron Amos won against newcomer Keisha Carey in the runoff election after they defeated challenger Tony Burks in the general election. As of December 5, 2017, the runoff election was too close to call. The open District 3 seat drew five newcomers, Adzua Agyapon, Lewis Cartee, Michelle Olympiadis, Antoine Raynard Trammell, and Rashida Winfrey. Olympiadis-Constant defeated Agyapon in the runoff election. Newcomer Erika Yvette Mitchell defeated Raynard Johnson in the runoff election after defeating candidates D'Jaris James, Jatisha Marsh, Bobby Montgomery, and Jackye Rhodes for the District 5 seat. In District 7, newcomer Kandis Wood Jackson won against Patricia Crayton after they defeated candidates Nathaniel Borrell Dyer, John Wright, and Micah Rowland in the general election.[6][7]

In the general election, incumbent Leslie Grant defeated challenger Ade Oguntoye to retain her District 1 seat. Incumbent Nancy Meister was the only candidate to file for the District 4 seat and won unopposed. In District 6, incumbent Eshé Collins defeated newcomers Valrie Walker Sanders, Patreece Hutcherson, and Donta McMichael to retain her seat. District 8 incumbent Cynthia Briscoe Brown won against challengers Ben Stone and Charlie Stadtlander. Incumbent Jason Esteves was the only candidate to file for the District 9 seat and won unopposed.[3][4][5]

Since elected to the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education in 2017, Erika Y. Mitchell has been "YOUR CHAMPION FOR OUR STUDENTS". When it comes to serving her community, Mitchell is an active Board Member and a strong believer in student, parent, and community engagement. She believes in meeting the students and their families where they are.

During Mitchell’s first term in office, she developed the first electronic newsletter for her district, established community partnerships, advocated for the renovation of the district Planetarium, and advocated for the repurposing of the vacant school buildings into community centers, she was a strong voice for the Food pantry program in each school, one-one digital devices for all students, and focused on student outcomes.

Mitchell currently serves on the Atlanta Board of Education’s Policy Review Committee, Equity Taskforce, Audit Committee, and the Boards of Directors for the Atlanta BeltLine. In addition, Mitchell is currently on the Georgia Statewide Human Trafficking Taskforce Workgroup, Fulton County Citizen Court Watch for Zone 4, and was appointed by the City of Atlanta’s Mayor Bottoms to serve on the Atlanta 2020 Census Committee. In 2019, Mitchell was selected to sit on the interview panel for the Fulton County Juvenile Court Judges section.
Education Policy

Mitchell has led the school board with her work in policy development. Mitchell wrote the first school district’s Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking policy, Trauma-Informed Practices policy Restorative Justice policy, and Early Literacy policy, co-wrote the Atlanta Public School Equity policy, and wrote the Equity and Anti-Racism Resolution for Atlanta Public Schools.
Mitchell is also an elected member of the National School Boards Association’s Council of Urban Boards of Education’s Steering Committee and chaired the Policy & Resolution Committee for both Councils.

Mitchell wrote the language for the National School Board Association’s Resolutions: Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Resolution, Trauma-Informed Practices Resolution, and Restorative Justice Resolutions.
