Ernest Almonte to run for Governor
May 22, 2012
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island: Former Democratic Rhode Island State Auditor Ernest Almonte has filed paperwork with the Board of Elections to run as a Democratic candidate for Governor in 2014. Although he has yet to make a formal announcement, after filing he stated, "A lot of people do exploratory committees – I’m not that way. This is what I’m doing."[1][2]
Almonte is just the first of several potential Democrats who are thought to be considering a run for Governor, among them State General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, and former Attorney General Patrick Lynch. Incumbent Lincoln Chafee (I) has indicated that he will run for a second term.[2]
Almonte holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bryant University, and currently serves as CEO of his own accounting firm, Almonte Group LLC. He was appointed auditor general in 1994 and held the job for 15 years. On his candidacy, he said, "I am running because I can make a positive change for this state. I will exercise leadership by giving character, competition and compassion, and I will create an infrastructure for success and an infrastructure for opportunity for everyone in this state."[2]
