Campaign themes
2014
Gyles' campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Ethics & Accountability
- Excerpt: "As an independent candidate, I strongly support the Assembly's decision to repeal the "master lever" straight-ticket voting option in 2015, but I think it should have been done immediately."
Economy
- Excerpt: "Stabilization of the state budget will be one of my highest priorities. My goal will be to scrutinize spending allocation and root out inefficiencies, duplication, and archaic systems and departmental processes with an eye toward achieving annual budget growth that is equal to or less than inflation."
Education
- Excerpt: "I'll call for a performance audit of the state funding formula and stand up for the Providence school system to make sure it gets a more equitable share (particularly in the critical early grades, before students fall behind). I also support universal public pre-kindergarten with trained ESL teachers. I believe additional educational dollars can be found with careful budget scrutiny for waste and inefficiencies."
Environment
- Excerpt: "In the General Assembly, I'll push for more progress on the advances we've made in the past two decades in healing Narragansett Bay, and I'll work to ensure the Department of Environmental Management has the resources it needs to perform its numerous critical missions efficiently. Since our state's economy is so dependent on our natural environment, protection of our natural resources should be considered part of economic development—not a detriment to it."
