I am a pre-med student and I am on the steering committee of Recall Houston, an effort to oust Mayor John Whitmire via recall election. One of the first things the Mayor did after getting was ripping up my neighborhood to remove a median that helped to make it easier to cross Houston Ave. Not long after I started looking for ways to fight back
  • The Mayor has cut our drainage, infrastructure, and City services to fund police raises we can't afford. In FY27 we're going to be looking at a $227 million deficit due to the actions of the Mayor.
  • Our Council and Mayor are not rising to the task of standing up against fascism, they are allowing HPD to cooperate with ICE knowing full well they have targeted victims within the Houston.
  • Public utilities should be publicly owned, it's time to municipalize CenterPoint. They have repeatedly proven incapable of providing reliable service
Healthcare is a big issue for me, I've dealt with Crohn's disease most of my life. In that time I've seen how hard it is just to keep access to medication in our healthcare system, we desperately need universal healthcare.
I think those elected should be standing up for what's right no matter how slim the odds. The government should be acting in ways that benefit their constituents, prioritizing people over profit.
My health setting back progress in my life has been a common theme. Starting out basketball only to get a couple games of the season before my health was too much. This pretty much became a rinse and repeat cycle until I'd get on a med that worked for a long period only for it to stop working down the line.
