Dong provided the following statement to the Pima County School Superintendent:

It has been an honor to serve on Sunnyside Unified School District’s Governing Board. As a life-long educator, serving my community in this capacity has given me the ability to make available opportunities for our students, our families and our community. I believe this community and its talented students deserve a strong school system that will provide the academic and technological tools they need to compete aggressively and successfully.

One of the areas I have been firmly working on is decreasing the drop-out rate and increasing the graduation rate. This has taken a persistent effort from our staff, our families and our business partners. Gratefully, our efforts have been successful, and we are no longer labeled a “Drop-out Factory.” Our graduation rate has almost doubled, and with the drop-out recovery programs, we are reaching those student learners who call for a diverse and personal education. We have been able to implement curriculum, technology and attendance initiatives that have turned our numbers around. My goal is to set in motion opportunities that will increase these graduation numbers.

We have surrounded our students, our families and our community with technology and the knowledge of how to compete in an increasingly hi-tech world. I am proud of my role in bringing our community to the forefront in the competitive race of our global economy.

Over the last few years, we have been able to give every student from grades 4 through 12 laptops so the teachers and the students could expand their instruction beyond textbooks and the classroom. Also, we have been able to acquire Wi-Fi opportunities throughout the community, whether in student’s homes or at the many businesses that stepped in to volunteer Wi-fi at their locations.

We have implemented policies that make our district family friendly, such as pre-school, all day Kindergarten, safe and orderly campuses, and health and wellness plans. I have had the opportunity to support passionately the arts, music, sports, student leadership, counselors, librarians and nurses. I am looking forward to working with the community to design and open a fine arts school.

Over the years, it has been rewarding to develop collaborations with businesses, colleges, universities and the medical community to not only bring in millions of dollars, but also bring in hundreds of adults working directly with students and their families in building an educated, healthier and stronger community.

I would like to continue to use my experience as an educator and a board member to advocate for the district. We must continue to evaluate the district’s policies and procedures to ensure the financial health of the district. We must continue to evaluate the curriculum so as to insure compliance with the district’s mission and vision and Arizona State requirements. We must insure that we are effectively addressing the students’ academic needs and the teachers’ instructional needs. We must continue to set high expectations and effectively meet them. Much has been accomplished, but we can’t slow down or stop now. For our community, we must continue.[4]
