Expand all | Collapse all

Business professor of operations and supply chain management (PhD in operations management from Northwestern University).

Earlier education in chemical engineering (BS degree from BYU and MS degree from UT-Austin).

Evan moved a lot in his youth as his father was shuffled from one collapsing industry (like coal and steel) to another. As he moved with his family, he witnessed the economic collapse of both rural and urban communities. He learned the value of freedom, food, shelter, and security. Now, in his precious little "spare time" and with his knowledge and experience, he's helping Utah businesses and individuals handle the sudden economic disruptions from COVID and prepare for a turbulent future that is fast approaching. In his commitment to truth, reason, and understanding, he hopes to act in a way the Founders would be acting if they were leading the nation today.
  • Our economy is vulnerable, and major economic threats are in the forecast. With my business and economics knowledge and expertise, I can navigate our economic future far better than any other candidate.
  • Elected officials are sacrificing core American principles in exchange for campaign contributions. If we elect those that raise and spend the most money promoting themselves, how can we expect our nation to succeed?
  • As a nation ruled by the governed, credit for success and blame for failure rest on our own shoulders. If we each strive to become the best version of ourselves, there is great hope for our nation's future.
* Economic security for ourselves and our posterity
  • Freedom, liberty, and justice for all
  • Domestic security and tranquility
  • Self governance
  • Campaign finance reform
I greatly admire George Washington. Like him, I am willing but not eager to serve in a political role. Like him, I will not try to promote myself. If elected, I would strive to be an example of American ideals including respect, honesty, and integrity. Like him, I would try to foster an environment in which the governed eagerly provide their consent. And, like him, I would leave my role after at most two terms.
- Honest, transparent communication to constituents so that the people have the relevant information to govern themselves

- Sincere listening to constituents
- Empathy
- Integrity and commitment to American principles and values

- Courageous leadership, exemplifying the highest standards

Logic and reason
Nonfiction: Thinking Fast and Slow. This book helps me better understand my own thought processes and better overcome flaws in my thinking.
Fiction: The Book Thief. It's a beautifully written book with lovable characters. I love the creativity in having the story narrated by Death.
I strongly support term limits. The exact number of terms is negotiable, but I believe the 8 years allowed for a president is a good starting point for legislators too. Since the term for a U.S. Senator is 6 years, two terms (a total of 12 years) would be a good starting point. For members of the U.S. House of Representatives, four or five terms (a total of 8-10 years) would be reasonable. Supreme Court justice term limits could also be beneficial.
The filibuster is a crucial element of the U.S. Senate and must remain. While the precise number of senators required to overcome the filibuster is debatable, the filibuster is the strongest force for legislative compromise.
Compromise is sometimes required for effective policymaking. The Founders provided excellent examples of compromise and even tried to build compromise into the structure of the federal government. When possible, however, we should strive for cooperation and coordination that lead to outcomes superior to those from simple compromise.

Campaign website

Barlow's campaign website stated the following:

My stances are based on this nation's mission and values; logic, reason, data, and truth; and empathy and compassion. I am not all-knowing or all-wise or infallible. If you suspect I'm wrong in any stance, I hope you'll discuss it with me and point out where I'm wrong.

ECONOMY AND TRADE

  • Improving the economy is vitally important to improving lives. We must improve sustainably, however, so that we "secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves AND OUR POSTERITY" (emphasis added).
  • The Economic Future, Labor and Employment, Taxes on Businesses and Self-Employed, Federal Debt, Income Tax, Tariffs, Foreign Trade

PUBLIC HEALTH

  • The unhealthy accelerate the spread of disease and are unable to fully contribute to society. Healthy workers are more productive. Healthy children learn better in school. Healthy parents better raise healthy children. Nutrition and preventive care are the foundation of low-cost health.
  • Public Healthcare, Welfare, Nutrition, Mental Health

LIBERTY, EQUALITY, AND JUSTICE

  • Liberty, equality, and justice FOR ALL: liberty to do what we want without inflicting harm, and justice to correct injustice. We need continuous improvement of the justice and social systems, remembering that the people involved on all sides are people like us.
  • Liberty and Justice, Equality, Civil Rights, Empathy, Role of Public, Crime

ENVIRONMENT

  • If we are really to "secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity," we need to ensure that our posterity inherit a more sustainable version of the world than the one into which we were born.*
  • The Future, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Conservation vs. Development/Restoration, Renewable Energy

EDUCATION

  • Abraham Lincoln said, "Upon the subject of education, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in." Education can help "form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity."
  • Funding, Incentives, Curriculum, Online Education

ABORTION

  • I oppose the use of this sensitive issue as a political weapon. We can handle the truth.
  • Pro-Life AND Pro-Choice

DEMOCRACY AND SELF-GOVERNANCE

  • The greatest strength and potential weakness of our nation is us, the people. To strengthen our nation, we must strengthen, uplift, inspire, and inform our people.
  • Balance of Federal and State, Voting and Election Security, Representation, Extremism, Supremacy[4]
—Evan Barlow's campaign website (2022)[5]
