Campaign themes
2014
On his campaign website, Chemers highlighted the following issues:[2]
Irvine Business Complex
- Excerpt: "Already, both Tustin and Newport Beach are suing the City of Irvine over the anticipated negative impacts of this massive project. This is costing Irvine taxpayers even before one home is built. I will fight for necessary and appropriate review of the potential impacts and seek transparency and community involvement in our city council deliberations."
The Great Park
- Excerpt: "Past City Councils have spent more than $20 million per year for a dozen years, more than $250 million to study, revise, publicize and promote the notion of The Great Park. And what do we have to show for this colossal waste of taxpayer dollars. Very, very little, indeed. Think of what just 10% of that $250 million could have bought in soccer fields, dog runs, tennis and basketball courts, baseball fields, youth recreation facilities, public pools and well tended hiking, biking and horse trails?"
IShuttle
- Excerpt: "IShuttle is another example of government over-reaching and under-thinking. This little used shuttle service costing local taxpayers $120 million over 30 years. It’s a ‘free’ shuttle designed to bring residents to work and other venues around the business areas of Irvine. Unfortunately, the average cost per rider is roughly $17 a-ride. We should be better off buying our retired bus drivers Mercedes and have them personally pick up IShuttle riders for home – to work – to shopping on an individual basis [...] I will work to end the IShuttle. The OCTA already services those same routes."
Pensions
- Excerpt: "At my first City Council meeting, as soon as I’m sworn-in, I will introduce legislation to get Irvine off the employer-paid benefits system, preferred by the public employee unions, by creating a new IRA-style system that so many other California cities have instituted. This system is a private sector staple that helps employees fund their own retirement with reasonable contributions from their employer. This new system will keep Irvine from going broke and give our city employees more power and more options in planning their own retirements."
