What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
1. Giving teachers fair and competitive salaries and creating a safe and engaging learning environment. 2. Making Maryland the fifth state to guarantee paid family and medical leave. 3. Passing Evelyn's Law, which will bring much-needed protections to our seniors in elder care.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about how policy affects women and families. Women and families are the core of our communities and when they are supported, we are all supported.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Tammy Duckworth. To say that she overcame adversity would be an understatement. She has seen intense combat and earned multiple combat awards. She is now a U.S. senator who fought to get 12 weeks of paid leave for military families. She is a huge champion for an egalitarian society. She sees the bigger picture of what this country could be if we all take care of one another.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, empathy, dependability, strength, transparency, and integrity.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Adaptability, empathy, a wide range of experiences, military-trained, flexibility, financial knowledge and experience, mother of five.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To prioritize the people of Maryland over partisan politics and to fully represent the people of District 33 by continually reaching out to hear from them. Also, to critically analyze all legislation to ensure it is benefiting the most amount of people possible in the most efficient manner.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to be remembered as a leader who fought for women's rights, true family values, and a better community for all people, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The Phillies winning the World Series. I was 8 years old.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I worked at the snack bar at a swim club for two summers.
What happened on your most awkward date?
We were driving back from Niagara Falls, which was our first date, and I knew I didn't want to pursue a relationship. We were heading back to New Jersey and I was trying to think of a way to tell him that it wasn't working. I sighed with resignation, and he reached over, took my hand and said, "I know, I think I love you too."
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Passover because it is a time where the entire family comes together to celebrate our heritage and our resilience and spend time with one another.
What is your favorite book? Why?
"The Red Tent" because it finally showcases biblical history from the point of view of the women that shaped it.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My husband.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
"My Life" by Billy Joel
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
As the only female aviator in my squadron, I spent two deployments challenging preconceptions and working hard to build consensus, all while entrenched in an environment of sexual harassment and sexism.
Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The Senate has one person representing each district, so that one person must be able to accurately and adequately represent over 100,000 people. The House of Delegates has the sole responsibility to impeach members of the executive branch; and the Senate has the responsibility to try anyone who has been impeached.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of a unicameral state legislature, in your opinion?
N/A
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I think it is beneficial, but not completely necessary, to have previous political experience. It is useful and helpful to constituents if their representatives have some knowledge of the inner workings of government and can therefore navigate the system more easily and efficiently. I have experience working in coalition to get legislation written and passed.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
23,000 women are running for office across the country. In Maryland alone, if all of the women won who are currently running for state positions, we would make up 51% of the General Assembly. This sharp increase is a quick change from a formerly male-dominated legislature. It is always challenging to get things accomplished with a large group of people in the middle of sudden and rapid change. This is why my experience as a Naval officer in combat will be crucial.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The state legislature should work with the governor within our system of checks and balances laid out in our State Constitution.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
It is not only beneficial, it is a crucial component of the job. Regardless of what your political party or background beliefs are, everyone in the legislature was elected to make Maryland better as a collective whole. It is therefore vital that each component (each legislator) be a cohesive part of that whole. As the only female aviator in my squadron among mostly male Republicans, I am intimately familiar with working across the aisle and building consensus among people of different backgrounds and beliefs; and I look forward to doing that in the General Assembly as well.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
There is a mathematical way to fairly redistrict. It was presented in a scholarly article from the University of Chicago. I favor implementing this algorithm into a non-partisan computer to redistrict. Alternatively, a non-partisan commission should be appointed.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
First choice: the Finance Committee. Second choice: Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee
If you are a current legislator, what appealed to you about your current committees?
N/A
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Absolutely; I would love to create a Progressive Caucus and be one of its leaders. I also aspire to be a leader in the Women's Caucus.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Along with Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, Representative from Maryland Jamie Raskin has been a vocal advocate for both Maryland and the nation in Congress over the past two years. While in the Maryland legislature, he was the sponsor of the bill that created Benefit Corporations, which are for-profit entities that give back to society. He also introduced legislation for medical cannabis and same-sex marriage.
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
Not at this time. My desire is to concentrate on representing the citizens of District 33 to the best of my abilities.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
One of my future constituents lives between two construction projects, neither of which she knew about or approved. The construction was so frequent and disruptive that cracks began to appear in the walls of her house and she was losing sleep. She had to leave the house and stay with relatives on the West Coast during the height of construction. Development is out of control and happening without the approval or knowledge of the residents.
