Candidate Connection

Everton Blair participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 16, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Everton Blair's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My first priority would be to interrogate our budget and staffing allocations to ensure that all students are receiving what they need in order to be successful in our system and that there is alignment between what we say matters and how we are prioritizing those issues with our money.

My second priority would be to increase the services for students who are coming into our system significantly behind grade level. I would seek to invest in our teachers to give them the time, respect, compensation, professional learning, curriculum and instructional support that they need in order to deliver a high-quality education for all students.

My third priority would be to include student and teacher voice on our board by having a dedicated format to hear from them in our decision making process, whether that be in the current PTA, teacher advocacy and/or student leadership groups.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am most personally passionate about public education because I firmly believe that a quality education can open doors that no other institution in our society can. That means that it is up to us as leaders to ensure that we have given every opportunity at our disposable to equip our students with the knowledge and skills to lead a successful life of their choosing.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Everton Blair answered the following:

What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?

I bring experience as a Gwinnett County Public Schools graduate who spent all K-12 years in the system and witnessed on the receiving end all of the changes that have occurred across our county. Professionally, I have education experience as a former HS math teacher (Geometry, AP Calculus and Statistics) and policy experience at the local, state and federal level, which allowed me to work with superintendents and chief academic officers of the largest school districts across the country and serve in President Obama’s education administration. I am motivated to serve on our board to increase the representation of student, teacher and community voices in our decision-making process and to use my vast educational experiences to help make our school system even better than it already is![3]
