Every vote counts: Close ballot measure races in the largest cities

In 2017, Ballotpedia covered the results of 180 local ballot measures in the top 100 U.S. cities by population, excluding cities in California, which are covered separately here. Of those 180 measures, 161 were approved (89.4 percent), and 19 were defeated (10.6 percent). We have identified six contests that were decided by a margin of less than 2 percent.
Close races
- Tucson, Arizona, voters approved Proposition 203, a sales tax to fund Reid Park Zoo, by a margin of .38 percent. This was equal to 298 votes out of a total of over 82,000.
- Voters in Oklahoma City approved Proposition 11, a $9 million bond measure to improve the city arena, by a margin of .68 percent. With over 41,000 votes cast, this amounted to 282 deciding votes.
- Kansas City, Missouri, voters approved Question 1, a measure to expand the city’s streetcar system, by a margin of 1.26 percent, or 427 votes.
- Plano, Texas, voters defeated Proposition 6, a $3.5 million bond measure for historical preservation projects, by a margin of 1.16 percent, or 298 votes.
- Voters in King County, Washington, defeated Proposition 1, a sales tax measure that would have funded a cultural access program, by a margin of .9 percent, or 3,740 votes.
- Aurora, Colorado, voters approved Question 2K, a measure to increase the salaries of the mayor and city council, by a margin of .61 percent. This was equal to 269 votes out of a total of over 43,000.
