Three seats on the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education were up for general election on October 7, 2014.

Incumbent John Thies ran against Michael O’Brien for Seat E. Incumbent Sean Rice was unopposed for Seat F. Newcomer Denis Gardella challenged incumbent Wendy Charmaine Dominique for Seat G.

Newcomer Michael O’Brien defeated incumbent John Thies for Seat E. Incumbent Sean Rice was unopposed for re-election to Seat F. Incumbent Wendy Charmaine Dominique won re-election against Denis Gardella for Seat G.

Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is located in Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska. Fairbanks North Star Borough is home to 100,436 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Fairbanks North Star Borough School District was the third-largest school district in Alaska, serving 14,360 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Fairbanks North Star Borough outperformed the rest of Alaska in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.6 percent of Fairbanks North Star Borough residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.5 percent for Alaska as a whole. The median household income in Fairbanks North Star Borough was $69,485 compared to $69,917 for the state of Alaska. The poverty rate in Fairbanks North Star Borough was 8.0 percent compared to 9.6 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Board of Education consists of seven members elected to three-year terms by geographic electoral districts, two appointed military base officials and one appointed student representative. There was no primary election and the general election was held on October 7, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[4]

Candidates began to file nominating petitions on August 1, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was August 15, 2014, and the deadline to withdraw was August 15, 2014.[5]
