Two seats on the Falcon School District 49 Board of Education were up for general election on November 3, 2015.
The at-large seats of incumbents Chuck Irons and Marie LaVere-Wright were on the ballot.[1][2] Irons did not file to run for re-election, guaranteeing at least one newcomer would join the board. LaVere-Wright and challenger John Graham ran unopposed and won the two seats on the board. The election was still held due to the district also putting a question on the ballot.[3]

Falcon School District 49 is located in El Paso County in central Colorado. The county seat of El Paso County is Colorado Springs. El Paso County was home to an estimated 655,044 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] Falcon School District 49 was the 18th-largest school district in Colorado, serving 15,063 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[5]
Demographics
El Paso County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Colorado in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 35.2 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 37.0 percent for the state as a whole. The median household income in the county was $57,125, compared to $58,433 statewide. The poverty rate in the county was 12.4 percent, compared to 13.2 percent for the entire state.[4]

Voter and candidate information
The Falcon School District 49 Board of Education consists of five members who are elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 3, 2015. Two seats were on the ballot in November 2015.[1]
Individuals interested in running for the board began circulating nominating petitions on August 5, 2015. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the 2015 general election was August 28, 2015, and the filing deadline to serve as a write-in candidate was August 31, 2015.[2]

Sharing the ballot with the November 3, 2015, school board elections was a question that would change the structure of the Falcon 49 school board from members elected at-large to by district.[7] According to the district's page, "Under the Plan, only eligible electors who reside within the boundaries of a director district will be permitted to cast a vote for a candidate running in an election to represent that particular director district."[7] The length of member terms and the number of members on the board would remain unchanged.
