Farmington Municipal Schools Elections

General election date
February 7, 2017
Enrollment (14-15)
11,765 students

Two of the five seats on the Farmington Municipal Schools Board of Education were up for by-district general election on February 7, 2017. In her bid for re-election to District 2, incumbent Robyn Hoffman ran unopposed and won another term on the board. District 3 incumbent Bill Young did not file to run for re-election, leaving the seat open for a newcomer. Vernon Keith Corley won that seat unopposed.[1][2]

Having 100 percent unopposed seats was not unusual for the district. In the 2013 school board elections, 100 percent of the seats were also unopposed, and in 2015, two-thirds of the seats were unopposed. Click here for more election trends in the district and the state.

Voter and candidate information

The Farmington Municipal Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held by district on a staggered basis every February of odd-numbered years. Three seats—from Districts 1, 4, and 5—were up for election on February 3, 2015, and two seats—from Districts 2 and 3—were up for election on February 7, 2017. There was no primary election.[3][4]

To be eligible to run for office, school board candidates had to live in the boundaries of the school district and be qualified electors of the state. To get on the ballot, they had to file on December 20, 2016. The deadline to withdraw as a candidate was January 3, 2017.[5][6]

To vote in this election, citizens of the school district had to register by January 10, 2017.[6] Photo identification was not required to vote in New Mexico.[7]

The 2017 Farmington Municipal Schools Board of Education election mirrored the district's 2013 election in which the same seats were on the ballot. Just as in 2013, the two seats up for election were unopposed in 2017. One incumbent won re-election, and one newcomer was elected to the other seat, which also happened in 2013.

In 2015, one of the three seats on the ballot saw opposition. An incumbent won re-election unopposed to another seat, and a write-in candidate won election to the third seat as no regular candidates filed to run in that race.
