Fayetteville Property Tax Increase, 2009

The Fayetteville Property Tax Increase was on the September 15, 2009 ballot in Washington County, Arkansas, where it was defeated.

  • No: 5,954 (59%) Defeatedd

The proposed measure, if enacted would have implemented a 4.9-mill property tax increase for area residents. The revenue collected from the tax would have helped to fund the construction of a newer version of Fayetteville High School. Over 10,000 voters turned out for the special election. Total cost of the high school would have been approximately $113 million. The results are to be verified by September 25, 2009.[1]

According to Laurie Masterson, who opposed the tax increase: “I think this sends a clear message that the majority of people are not going to just keep handing over money to government entities without a clear plan,”[2]
