Nashville, Tennessee: Judge Robert Echols, of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, has announced his plan to retire from the bench on July 22, 2010. The 69-year-old judge has served on this court since 1992. Previously, he was a lawyer in the private sector for over 25 years. Following retirement from the bench, he will return to the private practice of law with the firm of Bass Berry & Sims in Nashville. He mentioned that financial issues influenced his decision to retire. "Although I love my job, I would like to make some additional money for my family while I'm able to do so," he said. His salary as a federal judge is $174,000 a year, compared to some private practice lawyers who can make up to $600,000 a year. A replacement for Judge Echols will be needed in order to handle the court's already heavy caseload.[1]
