Federal judge John Roll shot and killed
January 8, 2011
Arizona: On January 8, 2011, Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, John Roll, was shot and killed outside of a Tucson grocery store. It is thought that the intended target of the shooting was congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.[1] She is in intensive care as of January 9, 2011. Five others were killed, including a 9-year-old girl, and 12 were wounded during the shooting.[2]
Roll joined the District of Arizona in 1991 after receiving an appointment from George H.W. Bush. Prior to that, Roll had served the state of Arizona as both an appellate court judge on the Court of Appeals and a trial court judge on the Pima County Superior Court.
In 2009, Roll had received death threats due to a civil rights case he heard where illegal immigrants sued an Arizona rancher.[3]
