BOISE, Idaho: Federal judge Lynn Winmill has temporarily barred enforcement of an Idaho law that makes it a felony for a woman to end her own pregnancy.[1] The law, enacted in 1972, criminalizes abortions performed by anyone other than a licensed doctor. Jennie Linn McCormack was charged earlier this year for allegedly ordering RU-486 abortion pills online and terminating her own pregnancy.[2] Judge Winwill issued a temporary restraining order against Bannock County prosecutor Mark Hiedeman, barring him from refiling charges against McCormack. McCormack's lawyer, Richard Hearn, lost his separate challenge to Idaho's newly enacted fetal pain law, which bans abortions after 20 weeks unless the woman's life is in danger. Judge Winwill ruled that McCormack, who is no longer pregnant, lacks legal standing to challenge the statute.[1]
