Boston, Massachusetts: The Massachusetts Governor's Council voted 6-1 to confirm attorney John S. Ferrara to the Superior Court bench on December 21, 2011. Ferrara was nominated by Gov. Deval Patrick almost a month prior, on Nov. 22, to replace retired Judge C. Brian McDonald as an associate judge.[1]
Many of the councilors praised Ferrara. Councilor Mary-Ellen Manning was the lone dissenter. Councilor Jennie Caissie, though she voted for him, had some suspicions about the appointment process. She found that the applications for judicial vacancies that candidates were required to submit to the Judicial Nominating Commission had been changed over the past year. She said that the applications were simplified and required the candidates to be less explicit about any past arrests or convictions they might have. Caissie stated, "It appears to me that somebody either on the JNC or somebody involved with the JNC is playing a game of political twister to benefit certain people and I think it’s unfortunate that John Ferrara got caught in those crosshairs."[2]
