Filing deadline report: Big election year for Alabama state executives kicks off
February 10, 2014
Montgomery, Alabama: Nine state executive positions are up for election in 2014 in the state of Alabama: governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, state auditor, commissioner of agriculture and industries and two seats on the public service commission.
The primary election will take place on June 3, 2014, with a primary runoff scheduled, if necessary, for July 15, 2014. A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Alabama uses an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[1][2][3]
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.
Seven of the nine incumbents are seeking re-election. The two exceptions are state auditor Samantha Shaw, who has reached her term-limit, and secretary of state Jim Bennett, who was appointed last summer to serve out the remainder of resigned secretary Beth Chapman's term with the understanding that he would not pursue election to a full term in 2014. The rest of the incumbents are:
- Governor Robert Bentley (R)
- Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey (R)
- Attorney General Luther Strange (R)
- Treasurer Young Boozer (R)
- Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries John McMillan (R)
- Public Service Commissioners Jeremy Oden (Place 1) and Terry Dunn (Place 2)
On Friday, February 7, the filing period for major party primary candidates came to a close.[4]
A total of 21 Republicans and 9 Democrats qualified for the major party primary ballots. The following unofficial list of candidates is current as of February 10, 2014.
