Filing deadline report: Few primary challenges in Ohio
February 6, 2014
Columbus, Ohio: Six state executive positions are up for election in 2014 in the state of Ohio: governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and auditor.
The primary election is scheduled for May 6, 2014. A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Ohio law provides for closed primaries, meaning a voter to be affiliated with a party to vote in that party's primary. However a voter of any affiliation can choose the ballot they would like to vote on the day of the primary and their choice may be regarded as registration with that party.[1][2]
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.
All six incumbents are seeking re-election. They are:
- Governor John Kasich
- Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor
- Secretary of State Jon Husted
- Attorney General Mike DeWine
- Treasurer Josh Mandel
- Auditor Dave Yost
Yesterday, February 5, the filing period for major party primary candidates came to a close.[3] The following list of candidates is current as of February 6, 2014.
A total of 21 candidates filed for the 6 offices - 6 Republicans, 8 Democrats, 5 Libertarians and 2 Green Party.
