Illinois: Retired Justice Mary Ann G. McMorrow, who was the first woman to serve on the Illinois Supreme Court, died on February 23, 2013 at the age of 83.

McMorrow was the only woman in her 1953 graduating class at Loyola University School of Law. She served on the Circuit and Appellate Courts before joining the Supreme Court in 1992. In 2002, she became the first female chief justice of that court. She retired in 2006 after spending 30 years as a judge in Illinois.[1]

At the news of her passing, current Chief Justice Thomas L. Kilbride stated,

We will fondly remember Justice McMorrow and always cherish the privilege of having worked with her. Being the first woman on the Court and to serve as Chief Justice, she was an inspiration to all women in the law in Illinois. But through her courage, perseverance, wisdom, and character, she was a role model for all lawyers, regardless of gender. Her legacy looms large over the Illinois legal system, evidenced by the fact we are the first court to include three women.[2][3]
