Washington, D.C.: Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania have asked the Supreme Court to consider hearing their plea for quicker federal action to keep asian carp and other invasive species from reaching the great lakes.[1][2][3][4] Asian carp are established in the Mississippi watershed, and the appealing states fear they may soon move into the great lakes region. The appealing states fear the carps' effects on the great lakes ecosystem would be devastating economically and environmentally, and as a result are hoping the Supreme Court will intervene.
In August the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit denied a request to order the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite a survey that is investigating ways to block the carp and other invasive species from entering the great lakes.[1]
