Flint City Jail & Police Levy Increases, 2 (May 2011)
Two Flint City Jail & Police Levy Increase measures were on the May 3, 2011 ballot in the city of Flint, which is in Genesee County.
The first measure sought to increase the current jail levy by 2 mills for a further three years in order to further help pay for the operation of the city jail.
- YES 3,102 (45.08%)
- NO 3,779 (54.92%)
The second measure sought to increase the current police levy by 2 mills for a further six years in order to further help pay for operational costs of police services in the city.[1]
- YES 4,504 (65.33%)
- NO 2,390 (34.67%)[2]
Residents of the city noted the tough choice, low unemployment coupled with the greater need to have a better public safety system in place. The jail was first opened in 1967, closed in 1987 and then was opened and closed two more times. Ongoing budget shortfalls had led to the shortfalls needed to keep the jail operating and open.[3] Three council members had come out against the proposed jail levy, noting that residents do not need further taxes and that they did not support additional taxes. Though they did note they supported the proposed police levy.[4]

| Jail question Shall the Charter of The City of Flint be amended to authorize the City to levy an additional tax on real and personal property in n amount not to exceed (2) mills for 3 years, from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014, for the sole purpose of paying for the operation of the city jail? it is estimated that two (2) mills would raise approximately $2,104,000 in the first year[5] |
