The 23rd Congressional District of Florida held an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz was re-elected on November 6, 2012.[1]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent was Alcee L. Hastings (D), who was first elected in 1992. Hastings sought re-election in the 20th District.
This was the first election which used new district maps based on 2010 Census data. Florida's 23rd Congressional District is located in southern Florida and consists of portions of Broward and Miami-Dade counties.[3]

Florida's 23rd District is a solidly Democratic district.
In June 2012, Sabato's Crystal Ball rated Florida's 23rd District as a solidly Democratic district.[8]
Impact of redistricting

In the redistricting process, the 20th District was renamed Florida's 23rd District.
Prior to redistricting the 23rd District was based in south Florida and consisted of parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties. The district also included Pompano Beach, Boynton Beach and Belle Glade.
The 23rd District was re-drawn after the 2010 Census. The new district was composed of the following percentages of voters of the old congressional districts.[9][10]
- 12 percent from the 17th Congressional District
- 10 percent from the 18th Congressional District
- 67 percent from the 20th Congressional District
- 4 percent from the 21st Congressional District
- 3 percent from the 22nd Congressional District
- 3 percent from the 23rd Congressional District

In 2012, FairVote did a study on partisanship in the congressional districts, giving each a percentage ranking (D/R) based on the new 2012 maps and comparing that to the old 2010 maps. Florida's 23rd District became more Republican because of redistricting.[11]

Cook Political Report's PVI
In 2012, Cook Political Report released its updated figures on the Partisan Voter Index, which measures each congressional district's partisanship relative to the rest of the country. Florida's 23rd Congressional District has a PVI of D+11, which is the 95th most Democratic district in the country. In 2008, this district was won by Barack Obama (D), 62-38 percent over John McCain (R). In 2004, John Kerry (D) won the district 62-38 percent over George W. Bush (R).[12]

On November 2, 2010, Alcee L. Hastings won re-election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Bernard Sansaricq (R) in the general election.[13]
