Flowood Liquor Sales Referendum (2009)
The Flowood Liquor Sales Referendum was a ballot measure that was on the June 2 ballot in Rankin County for voters in the city of Flowood. The measure was approved by voters by a 3 to 1 margin.
The approved referendum allows the sale of liquor only in hotels, restaurants and businesses in the city of Flowood. In addition, venues are mandated to cease liquor sales at 11 p.m. and at least half of a restaurant's sales need to come from food. Liquor stores and bars are no longer allowed, according to Mayor Gary Roads.[1]
The referendum was brought to the ballot when Mayor Rhoads signed a bill allowing voters to decide on sales by the glass.[2]
According to Rhoads: "We are just trying to get in the 21st century and get some table cloth restaurants around here.”
