2016

McDonald's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Budget deficit:

  • The budget deficit was not created by a price of oil crisis, the deficit was created by a leadership crisis in our state government. Like most Alaskans, I am incredibly frustrated that once again we find ourselves facing a fiscal cliff the instant oil prices have dropped because our legislators do not have the foresight to plan for long term financial security.

Education:

  • We need to stop having the same conversation over and over with one side saying “cut cut cut,” while the other side says “spend spend spend”. We need to determine what an adequate level of funding for our public school system is, and how we can best meet that level. We also need to strive to lower administrative costs so that we can focus our resources on providing a more competitive education to our children. We need legislators that are ready to get to work on solutions to the challenges facing our public education system, and that are dedicated to fight to keep lobbyists and special interests out of our public education system.

Healthcare reform:

  • When Alaskans paying for private insurance premiums saw their rates increase 31% last year and nearly 40% this year, that is not sustainable. When we have the highest commercial premiums in the nation, that makes Alaskan businesses less competitive. When Medicaid fraud costs our state over $100 million per year, that is not acceptable. As your representative, I will be committed to repairing our broken health care system.

Economy and gasline:

  • If we rush to build a gas line which we leverage against the main body of the permanent fund and then find ourselves pumping gas at a negative wellhead value, our state would be devastated.
  • The world climate has changed drastically in recent years, and these changes present us with opportunities to safely and efficiently develop this resource without sinking billions of dollars into the gas line project. With 200+ ice free days in the arctic per year now, new shipping routes are opening up. We need to see research done to explore the possibility of building a port on the north slope so that we can develop this resource and create new wealth for the state of Alaska without gambling the entire main body of the permanent fund.[5]
