Illinois: Gearing up for one of the nation's earliest primaries, four candidates have already expressed their desire to run for the Illinois Supreme Court in 2012. The seat is currently held by Mary Jane Theis, who was appointed to succeed Thomas R. Fitzgerald when he became Chief Justice. Theis' term lasts until 2012, but she is hoping to become a permanent member of the court with an electoral win next year. Also running in the Democratic primary are Joy Cunningham and Aurelia Pucinski. Cunningham has served on the First District Appellate Court since December 2006. Aurelia Pucinski was elected to the Fourth District Appellate Court in 2010.[1]

Meanwhile, James G. Riley has declared as the lone Republican in the race, so far. He is a judge on the Cook County 4th Subcircuit Court. He says he's running to give voters another option and is not discouraged by the fact that no Republican has ever won the seat. The primary election will be on March 20, 2012, or 286 days away.[1]
