Francis Thompson (Republican Party) is a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing District 19. He assumed office on January 13, 2020. His current term ends on January 10, 2028.

Thompson (Republican Party) won re-election to the Louisiana House of Representatives to represent District 19 outright in the primary on October 14, 2023, after the general election was canceled.

Thompson was a Democratic member of the Louisiana State Senate, representing District 34 from 2008 to 2020. Thompson served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1975 to 2007. He ran for Congress in 1996.

On March 17, 2023, Thompson announced he was leaving the Democratic Party and would register as a Republican. [1]

Biography

Thompson earned his B.S. and M.S. from Louisiana Technical University, and his M.Ed and Ed.D from Northeast Louisiana University. His professional experience includes working as a teacher, Vice President of a manufacturing company, Assistant Professor for the Louisiana Department of Education, and Assistant Professor at Northeast Louisiana University.

Elections for the Louisiana State Senate took place in 2015. A primary election was held on October 24, 2015, with a general election held in districts where necessary on November 21, 2015. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was September 10, 2015, at 4:30 p.m. CDT.[2]
Louisiana elections use the Louisiana majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

Thompson ran for re-election in 2011. She was unopposed in the October 22 primary. Because Louisiana uses a blanket primary system, a candidate can be declared the overall winner of the seat by garnering 50 percent +1 of the vote in the primary. However, if no candidate reaches this threshold, then a general election would have taken place on November 19, 2011 between the top-two vote getters.[5]

2007

In 2007 Thompson was elected to the Louisiana State Senate District 34. Thompson (D) finished with 14,301 votes and was followed by Willie Hunter (D) with 11,043 and Paxton Branch (D)with 2,378.[6]
